Hi there, I have just joined the forum after finding out that the battered old mixte I've been using as a hack bike is in fact a Viscount Corsair Tourer. It had been badly rattle canned (over EVERYTHING - components, spokes and dirt alike...) and I just used some thinners on the remaining transfers today. It's been bugging me for a while trying to figure out what it is, and now I know!

Welcome! Did you apply the thinners like you were rubbing away the dust on an ancient Egyptian artefact? If you do have a 'Corsair' transfer then people will really be interested in seeing the design of the decal , as to my knowledge I can't recall seeing a picture of one. Are you ok to post up some pictures ?

Yes, I was! Unfortunately the thinners haven't left much of the transfer left - I deduced what it said by a process of elimination. I'll try and post some pictures of what's left though.

You might be interested in this frame I have, which rejoiced under the name of 'Corsair Wayfarer'. I deduce that it originally was a tourer, although I haven't seen Corsairs of any description in Viscount literature. My frame looks like a standard early 80s (1982?) Viscount lugged Cro-Moly one. Currently I'm building it up as a sort of Viscount mountain bike - which never existed.

Very nice - I'm assuming that mine is probably built from the same tubing, the ride quality is certainly much better than the hi-tensile carbon steel in contemporary Raleighs and such of that era. Judging by the dates on the Maillard hubs (which look to be original) it's from 1984. It's actually my second Viscount as I have an almost complete Aerospace sitting in a shed doing nothing...

Get the Aerospace out, you'll love it!By the way, welcome aboard the good ship Viscount. You may have already found that we are a light hearted bunch, some older than our bikes, and, luckily some younger. If you are in the U.K. I can't recommend the Death Fork Rides strongly enough.Similar minded people, out for a great weekend, well organised by...I won't mention his name,he's shy!Any queries, just post them. There's always someone who knows the answer. Cheers, Pete.

I am in Edinburgh - anyone else up this way? The aerospace is sadly too big for me, and in need of restoration so not likely to be ridden any time soon (unless someone would like to make me an offer! :-D )

Just put a quick post up in the 'sales, trades..' area on the forum with a few pics and someone might make an offer. However, much to our regret, we have no members north of the border. There was one point when we thought Graeme Obree rode a Viscount but our bubble was burst!
EDIT -even though we have no members in Scotland , guests may read the forum and get in touch, so it might be worth posting up?
EDIT (again!) - Having said all that we do have a Scottish forum member , but she lives in England

Another Corsair! Welcome Linsey. I have one of these, although since its restoration, mine no longer looks like one - but it still rides well. (See the photos in the "Restoring my Viscount" thread in the Photographs section for the history of this!). It's been carrying me round the Yorkshire Dales this summer which has been giving my ageing legs a bit of a workout, so I've been alternating the pursuit of vertical with some less challenging excursions into the Vale of York. Here are a couple of pictures from last Sunday: a morning pootle around some of the local villages, on perhaps one of the last fine days we'll have. Two ancient artefacts together, with the third taking the photo.

Lovely restoration - I'm afraid mine doesn't look as good! I don't think I have any pictures of mine, but I have found a picture of my aerospace. Which also doesn't look as good!

Oh, I don't know, the ol' Aerospace has some great original parts and is quite a decent looking basis for a rebuild?
Alloy high flange hubs - the much talked about porthole chainring, the sort after 'V' pedal end caps. It's a hidden treasure!
Is the seat post stuck?

The seat post on the aerospace wasn't seized last I checked... But that was quite some time ago. I'll have to dig it out and see what it's like. I really should try to find it a new home where someone will restore it. I honestly can't see me finding the time - I have way too many projects to be done as it is. I only got it to save it from being taken to the dump - time it moved on I think.

I was speaking to my friend who owns a LBS and told him I'd figured out what it was - he told me I should have known by the colour since it's a pretty close match for a viscount biscuit wrapper!

Hello, Linsey, welcome to the fun. I like your mixte; that style has always appealed to me, and if yours is built with lighter, chrome moly tubing, well, it's at the head of the class.
Enjoy the ride, Frank
