Hi all, None Viscount related question... I picked up an all purpose Universe from the clutches of the scrap man a year or so ago. The only problem is that it has no seat attachment and the seat stem is stuck firm in the tube. After many hours of messing about and swearing, I realised the seat post might just be the right height anyway, and I can live with it (rather than destroy the frame trying to get it out). However, I am looking for the top part of this saddle fitting but don't know what this kind of thing is called , in order to do a search on ebay etc. If anyone can point me in the right direction, great, or failing that just tell me what the 'system' is called and I can trawl around. No bike jumbles lately but guess I might get lucky at one of them later in year.

All-purpose universe? Sounds a bit like the Hitchhiker's Guide or Men in Black.

Try 'saddle clamp parts'. But might be as cheap to buy the whole post and just use the bits you need.

As they do! I'll have a look in my bits box(es) tomorrow Jem.That post does seem a bit strange,it's got the grooves on the sides instead of on the top edge. Get back to you tomorrow. Cheers, Pete.

An old time solution that may or may not work for you. An aluminum seat post and a steel seat tube are dissimilar metals and galvanic action will lead to serious galvanic corrosion. Good old smelly ammonia can dissolve this corrosion. I had a terribly stuck seat post and the following freed it. I removed the bottom bracket from the frame. Then I inverted the frame and poured a cup of ammonia into the drain hole in the bottom of the bottom bracket shell. I allowed it to sit for a few days, drained the ammonia, and inserted a long steel rod thru the bottom bracket shell drain hole. I used a mallet to tap (more like beat on) the rod to push the seat post out. I actually had to repeat the process a couple of times and add heat. The frame was saved, the seat post was recycled. You may have to drill a drain hole as not all frames (including Viscount) have them.
Good Luck Jim

I've had stuck seat posts in the past and always been reluctant to get ammonia involved for many reasons, mainly for my own and others safety. Bearing in mind the bike was free and I would only be using it now and then, I don't think I'll go 'all out war' on it

Household grade (at the local market) ammonia will do; it does not have the hazards of industrial grade or anhydrous. You might try heat alone; if you want to save the paint use a heat gun instead of a torch.
All the Best Jim
