Whilst at the rally people where remarking on Lewis' slack chain, which was put down to his rear mech not having enough spring tension. I'd also shelved my short cage crane due to similar problems. Somebody mentioned (may have been Pete with his infinite wisdom) that some derailleurs have three different holes to adjust the spring tension. Well today I tackled and hopefully fixed mine. I took the mech apart and drilled a new hole further around so that the spring would actually work, then drilled a second hole even further round so it worked even better. I used a 2.5mm drill bit as that was the smallest I could find 2mm would have been better I think. Didn't take long to drill as it's only ally. Put it all back together made sure the lug at the back was tight against the hanger and I now appear to have a fully functioning Crane again, should also work on Tourneys as they are a similar design.

Nice work! I have a couple of old Cranes that might be able to return to service now. If we had a Viscount bible this would be an important chapter! b

Nice work! I have a couple of old Cranes that might be able to return to service now. If we had a Viscount bible this would be an important chapter! b At risk of offending anyone, if this were a chapter in the Viscount Bible, it would be a resurrection story? Great work Stoatie, many people will be grateful for this. In honour of your visionary work, may I propose that we name this the 'Stoatie Fix' or some-such?

Glad it worked Stoatie.'Twas I who mentioned the three holes,I must admit. One of the 10 commandments chiseled into stone tablets;-"thou shalt not bin old mechs, they can be "bodged"! Personally,I don't think that is a bodge,it's just providing the other 2 adjustment holes that Shimano forgot! Cheers, Pete.

Indeed, it's not a bodge. It's just a feature that appears on old-school cantilever brake-arms rather than derailleurs... b
