I have the 34 skip tooth free wheel. am bidding on a Shimano 600 long cage. Is there any other or better type available. Craine ones are a silly price. Still want retro type though. Chain will have to be longer and i know nothing about chains or what to get. Any advice appreciated. I know when i have the parts it will work, i will make it. Ray

I believe the 600 to be a very good RD of that era. I run one and never had any problems. I don't really know of anything else that would fit the bill better except maybe the Crane. I have a Crane on one of mine, I didn't realise they were much more expensive than the 600? but if you head over to Disraeli Gears or Velobase, and find the 600, the spec sheet will tell you how many teeth it can handle. As for the chain - I would personally just take the bike down to your local bike shop & ask to buy one & have it fitted.

Suntour vxgt! Enough said, superb mechs,I've used them from when they were new. Also, light, and a very easy cage for removing the chain. They're getting a tad expensive now.It may be cheaper to buy a complete bike, thus equiped. I would ride them in preference to Campag! Friction shifting,of course. Cheers, Pete.

How's this going Raymondo?
I was wondering the other day what is the lowest gear ratio that you could get on an Aerospace bike , while keeping to original era components (and most likely Shimano) and not spoiling the 'look'.
So, as you are doing on the back with 34teeth and a long cage RD, then without the hassle of changing the whole chainset and just finding a smaller inside ring - but then I wonder which FD of the era would allow the biggest drop from the largest to the smallest possible inside ring? Realistically, if the large ring is 52, how many teeth could a FD handle to switch between ? And would any of that have an effect on the rear and vice versa?
Does anyone know?

There are a few threads on this kind of set up on the CTC site. Try searching under Alpine chainset or gearing. It all depends on the total capacity of the f & r mechs, most will work outside their specified capacity. Cheers, Pete.

Disraeli Gears gives the 'official' (Sutherland's handbook) handling capacity for the derailleurs it describes. For instance (for the Crane GS - long cage):Maximum cog: 34 teeth (Sutherland’s 4th edition) Total capacity: 34 teeth (Sutherland’s 4th edition). So, for example, 14-34 on the rear cogs - difference = 20; 39 - 52 chain wheels - difference = 13. 20+13=33 This is less than 34 so it should be fine. Velobase gives some similar information, although it's a bit random as to what data are included. Of course, in practice you can usually go to a tooth or two more than the official figures. Disraeli Gears only does rear mechs, Velobase lists FDs as well. I'm not sure what effect the FD would have on shifting capacity. Obviously there must be limits as to what difference in chain wheel sizes a particular one could manage.

Ray Hi Ray I LOVE those skip tooth Shimano freewheels! Shimano did: 14 - 32 14 - 34 They even did them with a fetching gold anodised finish. LONG CAGE 1970s RDs I have used with them without any problems are: Shimano 600 Shimano Dura Ace GS Shimano Tourney GS Shimano Titlist GS Suntour VX GT 39/52 front chainrings work fine with the skip tooth freewheel. I've been using this combo for err, decades. Chain wise, I recommend 3/32 size KMC Z30 or 33. Great quality, smooth shifting, cheap and 'old gear' 5 speed friendly. Cheers Steve
