Hi all, getting a bit of slippage on 14-28 freewheel so probably time to change the chain and freewheel as it has done a few miles. I was contemplating giving myself a little bit extra help on the hills by looking at 14-32. Will it be worth it? Other than a little bit extra chain length, is this just a 'straight swap' or would the rear derailleur be a factor? How would i know if the RD could take it before buying the freewheel? Any thoughts appreciated Thanks in advance

It's the Deore 18AX, 6 speed block on the back. It has Deore RD..can't remember the actual name, but the one with Deers Head on.

Is it this one gem? If so it can take up to a 34T I'd second this. Short cage derailleurs normally can take up to 34 teeth.

Is it this one gem? If so it can take up to a 34T Thanks for that link Stotie. I had been on there before but forgot about it. After checking, I realise this one is mine (on another site) www.disraeligears.co.uk/Site/Shimano_Deore_derailleur_%28DE10%29.htmlAnd I now see 30 teeth is the max for it. Seeing as I was going to change the block for a new one, I may as well go up to 30 teeth. Any help I can get going up a hill has got to be worth doing.

Jem, once you have pictures, let me know, and I'll try to pop by Vintage bike cave and see if they have what you require (in case of a 30-tooth 6-speed). May not be new, but in good condition with them. I'll also check in the shop tomorrow. We normally have various sizes.

Flicking thru' eBay, 14-28 does seem to be a de facto standard. If you look for 'Megarange' you can find some bigger, like this 14-34 one. There are a couple of Regina 14-32s on eB at present, but they are silly prices. Some freewheels can be disassembled and the cogs changed, although I have never tried this and it implies that you can get the cogs you want separately. I think Sheldon Brown had something about this. If you were prepared to go back to 5-speed, there are some 14-32 options, including a skip-tooth one.

Yes, I did a bit of searching and turned up next to nothing with 30 or 32. I found those 'mega' Shimano ones with 34 teeth. And I found the 'silly' priced ones. And then the shipping from US put them out of reach. I am quite happy to drop down to 5 speed, so will probably look for those. Stella, thanks for your offer - if you see anything drop me a mail. I wish I'd though while I was at the bike jumble the other weekend.

I just bought these on fleabay. Only 5 speed but I have 126mm OLDs. Now I have enough to last me until Rapture. 14-30t. There are still some left I think and the seller is open to offers (e.g. I got five for the price of four). He also ships USPS 1st class, not that silly expensive eBay premium shite. They make a lovely, loud "vZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!" b

A great buy! I remember going into a bike shop and building the Suntour freewheel of my choice from a body and a selection of cogs displayed on a large board. Why can't we do that today? The only failing I find with these freewheels is the 2 tooth remover.I've got a really good freewheel with a 34 bottom gear, but, it's on a tandem wheel.I've broken 3 removers, and it's still solid. You've got years of enjoyment there. Cheers, Pete.

Hehe! I just reliased you can buy a Chinese-made SHimano 5 speed 28 or 34 t freewheel for half that price and free shipping!
You're right Pete, why can't we do that any more? I've got some amazing Suntour Pro-Compe Ultras, supposedly totally customisable, yet people I know who regularly service Sturmey-Archer hubs say "don't even think about pulling them apart."
Know what you mean about those two-prong remover tools. But at least they are proper PRONGS and not just little bumps like my beloved Dura Ace.
A big, big pro tip for anyone trying to remove a freewheel, be it Suntour or anything else: use a spare (quite long) quick release skewer to clamp the tool in place first. Then use a bench-mounted vice to grip the tool and use the whole wheel itself (in a horizontal position ideally) as leverage. You'll feel like a bus-driver, but its much more effective and less damaging than hitting a spanner with a mallet.

There's a NOS SunTour six-speed 14-32 on eBay now The equivalent of about £30 in US dollars, buy-it-now, post paid from Greece. Not a bad deal and a nice looking block. Four prong.

Bendo, that was exactly how I did it and still broke my removers!I'd also soaked the back of the block with Plus Gas for days before even trying to get the bugger off. I can't even use the wheel on a solo,as it is a purpose built Swallow tandem hub.I suppose I could ebay it complete, but you never know when it'll come in handy. Cheers, Pete.

That is just the job...many thanks for link. I am just slightly worried that HMRC will tax me on the way in - which will add another £18 on top. I've been lucky in the past ut also been whacked on items that are just over the threshold and it's painful.

You're ok. Despite being priced in USD, it's coming from Athens, Greece and therefore (Mr Farage not yet having had his way) we are both part of the EU. So no import taxes. Yippee!

Update - I have been in touch with the seller and he tells me he has been in bike business in Athens for 55 years. Due to his relatively short time on eBay, a limit means that he can't list all the items he has, but if you contact him with requests , then he is fine with that. (he also has frames)

For info- Just heard back from him and he has no knowledge of Lambert or Viscount. But for those interested, he said this... "I have Shimano parts hubs, stems, cassete freewheels, seat pilars, head sets, derailleurs, levers, brakes cranks etc. Also many Suntour derrailleurs, hubs, cassete 7 speeds, freewheels, seat pilars, brakes etc. Mavic rims & many buagio rims, Araya, Wolber, Rigida, Weinmann & some other. I have also bmx old school stuff. About nos frames i have Battaglin, Alan, Puch, Mercier, Dacordi, Atala, Litage Sakae, Guerchioti, KTM, Vitus, Peugeot, Gitane & some other brands. "
