Hi, guys.
It's rare that I really don't know what to do anymore, but this time I'm at the end of my tether. As you know I've built a yellow Viscount, which may have been a Sebring (front lugged, rear brazed), and it had come with cottered cranks (which I confidently binned back then). After getting it powder coated I learned that the BB shell seemed to have a sleeve in it, which had a thread. I could easily put in the BB unit on the drive side, British thread, but the non-drive side took a lot of effort and force. The cap also came out a bit when pedalling and started creaking.
You can clearly see the sleeve.
With the standard threaded unit fitted it looked like this.
Now I went back to finally tackle the issue and wanted to tap the thread, in case that's what's causing the problem, but the tapping tool didn't even go in, on either side!
I then tried to fit a threadless BB, but upon tightening it, (one person in one direction, the other one in the other), it turned as if the thread on the BB unit had gone (making a clicking sound). Looking at the thread and putting it together without force, it seems intact. Lots of head scratching by three mechanics ...
It seems the sleeve in the BB shell had moved, but I can't say 100%.
Anyone seen/dealt with something like this before?
Also: for the Viscount buffs with more experience (Steve?): I'm assuming that this frame was previously (factory standard) fitted with a press fit BB as most Aerospace frames, and some tosser didn't know what to do with that set up and decided to put in a sleeve and have it threaded to take a cottered pin crank set. Now my question: if I'd remove the sleeve (tapping/cutting it out) is it likely that I'm going to restore it to the original press-fit BB shell to take the original BB?
Help! It's my last chance of getting this sorted before I have to bin that frame. I'd rather not as it cost me a lot of money to get here in the first place.
