I am building another Viscount Aerospace GP single speed and this time I want to use the smaller 42T chainring to drive the chain while keeping the porthole "look." Many thanks to Wheelson for suggesting this modification and telling me about the process his friend used to prepare the chain guard.
I started with a worn 52T porthole chainring, scored the outside groove below the teeth with a utility knife, then broke the teeth off with heavy pliers. This left some jagged edges and irregularities, which I filed off by hand. The suggested method used a grinding wheel but I don't have one.
Reassembled, this is exactly what I was hoping for. I plan to set up a 42/16 gear, yielding a 71-inch wheel, slightly higher than the 40/16 I am currently running on a different Viscount AGP.

Brian, looks great! Mine is currently off the blue Viscount as I converted that bike to a triple. I do have a silver/black Aerospace waiting to see daylight again. I may follow your lead. Best, John “wheelson” Wilson

That is looking good Brian - Nice work!

I never would have imagined it would look quite that good, but it's superb.
Very smart work
