I've used a standard one and it worked a treat.

Like Stella, I'm pretty sure it's standard. But I have damaged the threads on some cranks, so one might almost believe it was one of those weird TA or Stronglight ones. But I expect it was just due to the softness of the alloy or the shallowness (?) of the threads.

Could well be someone tried that beforehand and stripped the threads slightly, and you were the unlucky sod who had to deal with the aftermath. Trick is (not saying you didn't do it) to tighten the extractor with a spannner. Not too much, but more than finger tight. I'm always a bit wary when dealing with old alloy parts.

I had to pull the Lambert style cranks off an SE.The threads were not very deep but did use the standard Shimano type thread. The cranks appeared to be made of a very soft cheese! The threads on the drive side said "cheerio",and it was only with some very careful wiggling about, that I managed to get it off.I also owned a 49d chainset at the same time. The threads on this are indeed different.I was very lucky to acquire a Park Tool puller that had TA and standard threads on either end of the extractor body, very useful. The alloy of the TA crank was vastly superior, seems a familiar story with Lambert/Viscount materials. Cheers, Pete.

Thanks everyone. I will proceed cautiously, this being my first set of real Viscount cranks.
I have all three types of crank puller, something learned from painful experience. I had a pair of Stronglight 49d cranks and an original TA crank puller tool. I removed them successfuly with it a number of times, until one day it stripped the threads on both the crank and the tool! That's when I learned that just because they're both French and both the same BCD, doesn't mean they use the same size tool. TA and Stronglight require different tools. The difference is minute, even less than between standard and Stronglight, but it's enough... b

Good luck, Bendo. Aren't Viscounts just a joy to work on?
I've used the BB puller tool for the first time today and am mightily impressed. It's like you're pulling the spindle through butter!
