I accidentally discovered that mineral oil (aka, baby oil) is a fantastic hand cleaner for the type of grease and dirt involved in bike work. Squirt a bit on your hands, rub them together, and wipe off with a rag. I don't know how many babies they have to press for a small bottle of the stuff.

Thanks, Brian, I’ll have to try that. DISCLAIMER: No babies will be harmed in this exercise. 😉 I’ve also read that Dawn dishwashing soap applied BEFORE working on greasy stuff works, but like gloves I didn’t like the feel or lack of it while working. Best, John “wheelson”

My father always had a tin of Swarfega to hand (sorry) when he was doing work that would get his hands greasy & dirty. I've never used it myself, except when I was a student and worked one summer as a maintenance guy in an old people's home in Wisconsin. There they had Swarfega with hand cream in it. It left hands so clean and soft that it was definitely worth getting dirty just to use it. Now I rely on washing up liquid to remove the worst of the grease and grime.

I recall Swafega in the '70's. Green goop.
Now , I occasionally use olive oil and salt , but most of the time just Fairy Liquid Washing Up.
I could probably get baby oil down at Poundland (budget shop). I'll give it a go. Which reminds me...not particularly bike related , but in Poundland they sell a great selection of spray can paints and primers for £2 which are approx £8-10 most other places

When I was a young lad, we had five and dime stores; makes sense as a dime back then, had the buying power of today's dollar. Any of you remember penny candy?

Around here we called them penny chews. Most common were the Black Jacks and Fruit Cocktail, and then the sherbet pics. I'd often hold out and buy the packs with some trading cards inside and a 'free' bubble gum. I've still got a stack of those cards in the loft.
