Every so often I get the urge to paint a frame but never get past the labor and/or expense involved. An example of the bikes I want to paint is shown in this photo from a current ad on Facebook Marketplace. I think the lot could be had for less that $100 and the bikes appear to be complete:
The idea is to refurbish these for use on the local bike trail and lend them out. This is part of a larger scheme but I will spare the details. Back to painting - I think it is necessary to bring up the finish on these bikes to make them attractive enough for people to want to use.
The question - would it work to simply sand the existing paint smooth and use it as a primer? If so, that would eliminate nearly all of the work and problems I encounter trying to paint a frame. What are the problems with this idea? All advice is welcome. I might try one as an experiment.

With proper prep, painting over old paint works fine; I would use primer before the top coat. Sanding the chips takes time but may not be important, considering the intended purpose.

My best experiences in painting have been powder coating, but at US$135.00 it’s a bit of investment. For a generic loaner bike, sanding is good, an etching primer for bare metal, and automotive paint. I’ve had better results with automotive paint for brake calipers or high temp paint. For bikes with non-generic colors, auto colors are great for matching. Best, John “wheelson”

I share that thought with you Brian - so good luck on this project.

My next wannabe paint project is the small Lambert frame that Brian sent my way. I had been hesitant to do that as the decals (transfers) that were commonly seen on line weren’t right for that early “15 SPEED GRAND PRIX PROFESSIONAL” lugged frame model. A few weeks ago I found a reproduction set, less the Bob Thom / Ian Steel / Reg Harris stickers. So I may actually get this one done and hope those missing ones show up someday. Since this one is for Mrs.W I guess this will be more than a touch up. White paint, too. Best, John “wheelson”
