Hi. I've recently succumbed to a special offer on eBay and bought a pair of Suntour Command shifters. I haven't received them yet but believe they will be like this: velobase.com/ViewComponent.aspx?ID=5d38a838-522e-46ab-9842-72828a27501aI am planning on trying them out on my Viscount Aerospace 400 (1980 or '81), which I have equipped with mainly Suntour components, Cyclone & Superbe, so vaguely appropriate for the year. I know the Command shifters date from the 90s but want to try them out. There is a seven speed block and a Cyclone (Mk 1) RD. Has anyone got experience of these shifters, hints or tips about fitting or using them? Thanks. Link to picture of bike below - not brilliant, it's up on the rack at work. flic.kr/p/LVqfGt

I have never seen a set of Suntour Command shifters; I do have this picture from the 1993 Suntour catalog. They seem innovative and may be an overlooked (perhaps killed off by bifters), but good idea. Interesting to see how they work for you. There must be a following as they are pricey on eBay. With regard to the online value of Command shifters, there has been a pair on eBay UK for £89.99 + p&p for months. Recently a pair appeared for £65 and, when I started watching the listing, I was sent an offer of £50, which I accepted. I think that was a good price for these apparently rare items.

These shifters seem to command a good price so I’d say you got a bargain. I have a set of the Shimano version, only ones I’ve ever seen, but I’ve never had the occasion to put them on anything. Now you piqued my interest, and I’ll have to fit them up to something. Best, John “wheelson”

I have never seen these before. I will keep my eye out at car boot sales and bike jumbles, I'd love to try a pair.

I asked Bard, the Google AI engine, to show me a picture of a bike fitted with Command shifters and it came up with this: www.retrobike.co.uk/threads/suntour-command-shifters-3-x-6-speed-never-fitted.51563/Not bad, eh? It also told me that: 'The Suntour Command shifters were introduced in the early 1990s and were an alternative to bar-end shifters. They were mounted just inside the brake levers on the handlebars, and had a ratcheting system for shifting the front derailleur. The rear derailleur could be shifted in either indexed or friction mode. The Suntour Command shifters were well-liked by many cyclists, and were praised for their smooth shifting and comfortable ergonomics. However, they were not without their critics, who pointed out that they could be difficult to shift from the drops, and that they were not compatible with all rear derailleurs. Despite these criticisms, the Suntour Command shifters remain a popular choice for many cyclists who are looking for a comfortable and reliable shifting system.' Checking in VeloBase, it seems I have the model SL-CD00, 7-speed version.
