When I read about Brian and Bendo acquiring interesting bike projects for nothing, or nearly nothing, I thought good things come in threes; who are what's next. I guess it was me; today I was given a 1986 Centurion Iron man. It looks to have been in good shape before being stored outdoors; not good, even in California. The frame is Japanese and made of Tange #1. It has a Shimano 600 (6300 sis) group. The paint is in rather good shape. The seat post and stem are stuck (naturally). The chain was rusty and in a knot; I had to cut it off with my handy Dremel. Everything turns freely, tires, cables, brake shoes and saddle are a rotten mess, but easy to fix. Sadly, it is a 60cm CC frame; too large for me, but ridable. I think it will be a great loaner for a tall person.
Ride Happy Jim

Looks like a great project. I'm surprised the posts are stuck. It must be the dry heat if you run into this frequently.

Ah, good old galvanic corrosion. Pick your poison: Kroil, PB Blaster Penetrating, ATF + acetone, or? And, of course, patience. Projects like this one are a challenge but oh so rewarding when you’re done. Best, John “wheelson” Viscount on the Outer Banks this week!

Projects like this one are a challenge but oh so rewarding when you’re done. Best, John “wheelson” Viscount on the Outer Banks this week! I have freed many a stuck post and stem; I start with a long soaking process with Kroil. It is a very satisfying, even victorious, feeling when they loosen. The bike should cleanup well and regain its youth. This project is like saving a lost abused puppy. At this point the frame is bare except for the seat post; only a few hours of soaking, patience is required.
Cheers Jim

Great score Jim! I've got one as well. They ride really well and was actually used by Dave Scott (the 1987 magenta/yellow model) in the 1986 Hawai Ironman championship race as you can spot in this video at the 25:40 mark. . I believe yours is also a 1987 Ironman Expert. It came in the red/white or the famous/infamous "Miami Vice" magenta/yellow which is what I have. Some interesting history with specs for your enjoyment. vintage-centurion.com/models/competition/ironman/87-89_expert.shtmlEdit: I just remembered I posted up about this back in 2015 on the All Japanese Bike Thread. Nice poster from the original advertisement as well. viscountandlambert.boards.net/thread/964/all-japanese-bikes-thread

I have heard these bikes are a great ride; I soon will find out for myself. The serial number on mine (N6B7219) indicates a February 1986 (6B) manufacturing date. The attached 1986 brochure page seems a perfect match in components, and the red paint color was one of the choice's; so it may be a 1986 Ironman, but could indeed be a 1987 model.
All the Best Jim
