I have been out of commission for over two weeks of prime biking weather due to a nasty foot infection that involved 10 days of antibiotics and minor surgery. Fortunately I did not end up in the hospital and I seem to be recovering successfully. I have no idea how this happened. There might have been a very light abrasion from my shoe and sock in that area following two heavy days of cycling, but no blister or obvious breaks in the skin.
Various images, solid tissue and joint fluid samples ruled out broken bones and gout. The final diagnosis was cellulitis and a possible joint infection. Whatever is was, I don't want it again. Once I get back on the bike in another week or so, I will be more diligent about foot care, clean socks, shoes, etc. and pay more attention to seemingly minor aches and pains.

Wow! Not a good thing to hear. Your luck sounds like mine. I was all happy, going on vacation last week of June, reasonably healthy and looking forward to a solid week of cycling on the North Carolina Outer Banks. I got maybe 30 miles in, then started coming down with Covid on Wednesday. Now I’m finally turning the corner after the full gamut of treatment, with a nasty headache and absolutely no energy. Mrs. W ended up with both Covid and influenza A but recovered a good bit better than I, with less treatment. So much for the weaker sex! So, Brian, I commiserate and hope we all get back to riding this season. Oh, and yes, both Mrs. W and I were fully vaccinated and boosted. Best (or worst), John “wheelson”

Sorry to hear that Brian. Was it just painful in the area of the foot or further up the ankle? A long shot , but you don't take a supplement of propolis by any chance do you?

Best (or worst), John “wheelson” Sorry to hear about that too John - almost everyone I know who didn't get CV19 in the previous waves, has had it in the last few weeks; it seems there are some very contagious strains of it about at the moment. Glad you are both on the mend - I hear from friends that they are left without much energy for quite some time.

Sorry to hear that Brian. Was it just painful in the area of the foot or further up the ankle? A long shot , but you don't take a supplement of propolis by any chance do you? The infection was centered in or just behind the large joint at the base of the big toe. My foot was red, swollen, and feverish up to the ankle and rising but I got to the urgent care facility before it got completely out of control. I could not put any weight on that foot for a few days but there was no continuous pain as long as I kept it immobilized. I don't take any supplements or medications except eye drops to control eye pressure.

I just looked up propolis and I guess the issue would be sensitivity to bees. I'm not allergic to them, which is a good thing. I get stung by bees and wasps many times each year, not sure why, just unlucky I guess.

Brian Brain - I asked because I used to take it many years ago (there were many reputable claims of health benefits at the time ), but stopped as it caused a problem with my big toe, then foot, and it looked very much like an infection and doctor first thought it was gout. It was neither of those but some reaction to the propolis. Just thought I'd mention it

The surgeon that opened my foot and took samples of tissue, synovial fluid, and a bunch of rotten looking stuff was pretty sure it would be gout, but it was not. It was "just" an infection.

Wow, I take a little vacation from the forum and all hell breaks loose with you two ( Brian and John). Glad everyone is on the mend and you both caught things early before things start to go sideways. It's been to dam hot and humid to enjoy cycling so just rest up and get ready for better times and better weather.
Cheers, Michael

That is one to watch for; glad to hear you are improving. Could be worse. This admirable rider never gives up! Cheers Jim

We get more than a few special needs bikes in the shop, racing hand cycles and the like. It’s so very hard to give up on something that’s been a massive part of my life for over 60 years now, so for me “where’s there’s a will there’s a way”. For now, a more upright position, wider tires, lower gears, upcoming e-bike commuter, . . . Best, John “wheelson”

I'm back in the saddle again.
Took a little 8 mile ride this morning and found that three weeks off the bike is too long. Fitness has definitely deteriorated and my foot ached a bit afterward, so I'll have to build back slowly but at least it was good to finally get out.
Hope everyone else has recovered and/or stayed healthy this summer.

Good to hear others are improving. Best, John “wheelson”
