Today I went out for what I thought would be a normal out and back 29 mile ride on roads and the local bike trail. The weather was good but when I reached the halfway point, farthest from home, it started raining and soon became a downpour. I waited under a bridge for a while and then continued through light rain. About 3 miles from home, there were sudden flashes of very close lightning and thunder, followed by a pounding of 1/2 inch hail stones that covered the road, froze the wet surface, and raised a dense fog, making progress very slow for the last mile. By the time I got home 10 minutes later, the sun was out and the sky was blue. I was soaked through and had welts from the hail on my wrists, which luckily were the only exposed parts. The temperature had dropped about 12 degrees F.
I was not able to stop for pictures, but my wife took a few at home just before I arrived:

Wow! We too had a hail storm late morning. Crazy for April but I do remember a few snow storms years ago. Ya never know. I bagged the idea of riding outdoors today after battling the wind yesterday and feeling more of the same today. A nice swim in a heated pool was a good choice today. Very happy I didn't sign up for either local race today....5K or duathlon. Fingers crossed for my super sprint triathlon next Saturday.

It was similar weather here yesterday , with a freezing start to the day, then hail, then sunny spells and temp up to 12 degrees or so. I was walking not cycling through it, and the hail started when I reached the summit of a hill with an iron age fort on it. They claim you can see 17 counties from the 360 view on the top, but even in clear weather I really doubt that claim.

I would like to look it up and see some pictures.

It's going to take a huge amount of imagination to see any 'fort' on here Brian - there was a great hand drawn graphic on a sign half way up that showed the defences and inner section of the wooden fort, but nothing remains as such except possibly ground works. The Romans most likely destroyed it I believe. This is the best site for information (even if it is really badly designed) www.hillforts.co.uk/the-wrekinBetter web site here for pics explorethewrekin.co.uk/wildlife-sites/the-wrekin-hilltop/Then there is a much more clearly defined hill fort not that far from this in the Malvern Hills , where less imagination is needed. Another good short walk. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Camp
