Yesterday, I rode with a gentleman about my age; he was riding a $14,000 Trek road bike. For once I could out climb someone! It seems his batteries were dead and he could not shift gears. All the more reason to stick with my old, affordable bikes.

Just googled most expensive bikes and came up with this:
I particularly like the $114,000 fixie. That must be a unicorn hide saddle.

You're right on the money Jim! Why complicate things? I just want to enjoy a simple bike ride without worrying about the bike now becoming a battery operated vehicle. Please let me keep my rim brakes as well! I get a kick out of reading how what should be simple functions on new cars are now a matter of going through multiple touch screens while driving. Is anyone thinking about just simple, reliable engineering?? I don't think I'll ever warm up to some of the new tech. I better stop now because I could go on and on..... Edit: I was just scrolling through Facebook "Solitary Cycling" with another Di2battery disaster. Solitary Cycling Todd A Collins · 55 mins · So the Campagnolo GranFondo was a disaster for me. It started to mist right at the start and that turned to light rain. So it was then cold. I was killing it for 40-42 miles and then my Di2 battery decided (even though charged all day yesterday) to just die. Turns out they only had mechanics at the first two stops. So I rode the last 53 freaking miles stuck in my easiest gear. So while going up it worked out fine. Or going down steep hills I was ok. But the flats were terrible. I could only manage about 12-14 MPH at full spin. But I finished because I just can’t quit something I start. It was embarrassing, it was humbling, and it was hard as hell, but I never quit.

Hmm. I should up the insurance on my gold-plated Lambert. I'm not sure if the writer of the article knows nothing about bikes or just had a lousy editor - this sentence is a bit puzzling: 'It’s made of really high quality bike material, including titanium allow and carbon fire.' and 'Thanks to its design, it’s capable of going really fast, as far as bikes go.' Both about the Litespeed bike, a bargain at $40,000

I think it great that ebikes enable riders to extend their riding life, or help get non riders in the saddle, However, they do seem terminally unreliable. If you do recent mileages you can expect problems within a couple of years. My wife had the motor on her £3k Specialized replaced within a year and less than 500 miles.

I agree with the positive points you make about e-bikes. I think the original post was talking about a human powered bike outfitted with electronic shifters. That just seems silly.

Yes, I’ve never though operating a gear shifter was hard work.

I'm waiting for the moment that a high-profile racer in the key final mountain stage of the Tour de France has his gear-changing stymied because another team has found a way to jam his wi-fi!
