I have been a bit subdued on my rides. I stop somewhere scenic and pray for the Ukrainian people; as well as the rest of us for that matter. I am old enough to remember the Cuban missile crises and how close we came to oblivion. Dad was an engineer, working (in the defense industry) on rocket engines. He said he might get some warning if missiles were about to be launched. We stockpiled food, loaded the car and hooked up our travel trailer. We planned our get away to five acres (we owned) in the middle of Nevada. Dad had a code phrase (The situation is as deadly as a cobra) which if heard, would bring us all home. I hope such a situation will never happen again.
May Peace Prevail Jim

Well said Jim. People in Ukraine and Russia just want what we all want, a decent life to pursue our goals and aspirations without fear. History which gave us Hitler, Saddam, and other madmen is again repeating itself with a Putin. I have ancestral roots there as my grandparents came to America from western Ukraine in the early 1900's. I hope as we all do that peace will prevail without further escalation and more bloodshed.

The humanitarian crisis is just absolutely heartbreaking. Most of the world seems to be responding in a positive manner. I personally like Jim’s idea about the power of prayer and the bike connection. As we feel helpless to do big things to bring an end to devastating events, riding more and driving less can’t hurt. Unlike the 1973-1974 energy crisis, this one has more far reaching horrors. The humanitarian crisis, of course, and I urge all of us to support whatever relief effort we deem most appropriate. The second crisis is the nuclear one. I spent 1973 on a nuclear missile site in Korea, and it is chilling to know that those weapons can be so easily engaged. My son is an engineer in the nuclear power field whose first assignment 10 years ago was to Ukraine. He is understandably concerned about the friends and their families there that he has come in contact with over the years. So this is long but please pray for peace and do whatever you can to make today’s crisis go away and for a better world tomorrow. Best, John “wheelson”

After the last couple of years, just as you thought 'things can't get worse'... they do. This is madness - and there won't be any 'winners' here. The number of evacuees is huge and it's heartening to see so many in neighbouring countries respond so positively.

Putin is a tumor that hopefully will be excised.

The way it was; we had practice drills in school. I hope this is not the way it will be.
Be Safe Jim
