A couple of days ago I returned from visiting relatives in the Arizona desert; Lake Havasu City to be exact. Our folks in the UK might wonder what happened to London Bridge after some crazy Americans bought it. Well, the hauled it piece by piece to Lake Havasu city in Arizona. There it was assembled (over a new steel backbone) on the entrance to a peninsula. Once built, they cut a channel (below the bridge) making the peninsula into an island. While visiting relatives I snapped this picture with the bridge decorated for Christmas. Each day was in the 80s (F) but I did not bring a bike to ride. Rats, missed the opportunity.
Ride Happy Jim

Great photo! Not sure why they got so excited about that bridge? It's nice, but not that spectacular is it?

You just don't find large stone bridges in the American West; so for us, it looks pretty cool. Add a bit of old world history (ours is short) mingled with the 60s British rock invasion, and you have a tourist attraction. It also is the only place in Arizona where you can trace the footsteps of Charles Dickens; a point made in some of their English based public events. The bridge is pure English; the hype is pure American. The merger makes money flow.
Cheers Jim

The story, very possibly apocryphal, is that when it was put up for sale, the buyer was under the misapprehension that he was buying Tower Bridge.

I have heard that many times and it is believed by many. This is fueled by most Americans believing Tower Bridge to be London Bridge. Nevertheless, they did see it before they bought it. Some say they hoped it to be Tower Bridge but settled on London Bridge; who knows? Perhaps a very sharp con man was working for the city of London? Of course Tower Bridge would have been much more impressive.
Happy New Year Jim

Maybe, but this happened long before Boris Johnson became Mayor!
