I mean to post this every time I clean a freewheel using the "rope trick". I found that a length of cotton clothesline fits snugly in the space between cogs and absorbs oil and grease very effectively. Put it in and pull it around the groove a couple of times and the spacers and sides of the cogs come out clean. Put some WD40 on the rope (or cogs) if there is heavy grease.

Great idea! I have always used shop rags. Your idea sounds better and I am less Likely to hit the cogs with my fingers.
