Yeah Jim, maybe that accounts for the typical behaviour of a squirrel confronted with a road: dart out - freeze - dart halfway back - dart out again and dive into front wheel.

So true.
I nearly caused an accident in Florida when I slammed on the brakes to avoid hitting a bird crossing the street. Of course that bird was about five feet tall. It is probably five years in federal prison if you run over one. I think it was one of these:
Around here there are always turkeys crossing the road and we stop. The exception was the unseen one that was flying low across the road. I didn't even know they could fly. That one came through my wife's windshield.

On my bike, I once ran over a suicidal rabbit, while on a curve, on a very fast descent ( 35° 5'26.80"N 118°33'39.76"W ). I tried a bunny hop, was too late, still hit the rabbit and managed to pretzel both wheels. Thought I was going to be creamed; pure dumb luck kept me upright. I was able to wobble home after adjusting the brakes.
Ride Safe Jim
