A reasonable penalty for reckless driving of this type would be vehicle forfeiture. In the case of a rented vehicle, a cash penalty equal to the value of the vehicle. And of course a lengthy driver's license suspension. The perpetrator would be provided with (and charged for) a vintage steel road bike, ideally a Viscount or Lambert, as replacement transportation.

So disheartening how often the simple actions we take for granted like riding a bike become confrontations with deadly consequences due to just plain stupidity, ignorance and hatred. When our cycling community is affected, it really jumps out at you but there's just too much of it in too many aspects of everyday life.

Had to google 'rolling coal'... WTAF? After 4 years of Trump I'm surprised that I'm still surprised that such idiocy exists. b
edit: realising this was a 16 yo. They're always capable of breathtaking levels of stupid.

And I had to google WTAF. The Wikipedia definition of rolling coal starts with "Rolling coal is the practice of modifying a diesel engine to increase the amount of fuel entering the engine in order to emit large amounts of black or grey sooty exhaust fumes."
How do you pass the emissions inspection with these mods? If it fails, I recommend a sodium silicate engine treatment like they used during Cash for Clunkers, another great social experiment. By the looks of this video, you could probably get the guys currently rolling coal to do the job. Add some methamphetamine into the mix and you might get them to do their own trucks.

Don’t know if it’s still true, but some states here in the USA at one time had lesser emission standards for diesel than for gas engines. I hope this has changed. Best, John “wheelson”

WTAF indeed. Being in the U.K. I’d never heard of it until I read Jim’s first thread about it. It’s difficult to comprehend that in a civilised society stuff like this goes on. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve got our fair share of idiots on the roads but this is next level.

This is an example of anti-social behavior. The modifications their the engines are illegal in all states; but not all states strictly monitor such things. The vehicles in question have an extra onboard computer with (at the touch of a button) an alternate air fuel ratio. These vehicles run at factory settings when emissions are being tested. This video (of a person in Canada) explains how it is done. He seems a bright young man; the type we want to marry our daughters.

Judging by the accent, terrain, vegetation, and the horde of flies, this has to be New Brunswick, eh?

Yes, Labrador, even worse for flies. About 20 years ago my brother and I took a trip into northern Canada to see the point where Manitoba, Saskatchewan, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut meet at a point. I can attest to the viciousness of the flies and mosquitos in that part of the world.

This crazy phenomena has grown to absurd levels. Some cyclists have taken to wearing helmet cameras so they can turn them in. In California this is taken seriously, but in other states that may not be the case.
I would not be surprised if the folks who stick their face in the smoke, also swallow Tide Pods (detergent).

The cyclist sounds quite young and placid. I don’t think some of the older guys would have put up with that, but then the driver would not have picked on them. The trip and fall at the end was some kind of karma.

I've been the victim of rolling coal in both my Prius and while cycling. It may not be a polite reaction but I calmly give them the finger and let it go at that. I also hold my breath until the smoke clears. Now that I have video cameras on the front and rear of my bikes, I'll head to the police if it happens again.

I have only been smoked once. Fortunately, where I live, we almost always have wind, which blows it away. As for the encounter with the moron in Britain; I am amazed it did not break into a fist fight. As the driver exited, the cyclists could have pinned him with the door and smacked him silly. A person is very vulnerable when getting out of a car. Not that I would ever condone or participate in such behavior. Cheers Jim

There are lots GoPro video compilations on YouTube of cycling in London it has become that bad and confrontational.

Another is to use a route planner to create rides where you don't compete with cars. Of course, if you have to cycle into the city for work, etc, then this doesn't work. Nevertheless, I am amazed at the routes I can plan using RideWithGPS, Google Street View, and satellite images. I live about 20 miles outside Boston and there are areas here that are very busy and unfriendly for cycling but I can almost always figure out a route on back roads, bike trails, park roads, and off-road paths that will get me where I want to go with almost no traffic and decent surfaces. The routes are usually longer than what is initially proposed by the program, but by only 10-25%.

I agree Brian, I’ve always planned routes dodging the bad roads. There are a few I can’t avoid because I live in a town centre but once I am clear of them the rest is good. All the near accidents with motorists I have had have been within half a mile of my house.

Maybe you can get a coal rolling option on this "bike" and play both sides of the game.
Actually, this is a Vermont ad, so maybe a wood-burning option would be more appropriate.

Here we have enough problems with kamikaze squirrels that dash across the road from hiding places in the grass verges: there have been a number of incidents where a squirrel has run straight into the front wheel spokes. The consequences are pretty bad for both squirrel and rider.
