I thought Suzue had vanished long ago but it seems they are still in existence. I picked up one of these high flange hubs for a new rear wheel build for the Toei. I thought it was NOS, but here you can buy them new from Japan: I think this price is for the rear only, whereas this one below is for the front and rear hub and takes up to 11sp cassettes:
When it arrived and I held it in hand I couldn't believe the weight and the quality of the finish. I thought it would be quite heavy being HF and not having any cutouts, but it weighed noticeably less than a low flange Specialized rear hub of the same dimensions (126mm, 32h). So if you're building up a bike that needs this look and you want a hub that'll see you out, go for one of these beauties! b

They don't come with that V-shaped cutout though. That's a customisation to allow broken spoke removal without having to take off the freewheel. b

I’m especially happy that I’ve had on my trail touring bike for years: 40h Sansin large flange (no cutouts) cartridge sealed bearings (like Viscount). Suntour and Specialized also used this design. Hard to find on US eBay but seem plentiful from Japan - probably ex-keirin equipment. Best, John “wheelson”

PS - the drive-side spoke removal idea was actually inspired by these Maxicars. But they are so expensive it was cheaper for me to pay a framebuilder to design and machine a solution on my Suzue hub. And I'm glad I did! Maxicar hubs are a grail part for touring bikes, but I feel I have something better and unique to my bike.

Having been a bike mechanic 1966-1970, 1974-1979 and now 8 seasons since my engineering retirement, I saw a lot of these excellent old components when they were in their heyday. Now, with all the modern versions, I can really get into the comparisons. Obviously, there were good and bad through each generation. On my personal bikes: Suntour V series including the bar end shifters. Shimano 1st generation Dura Ace including Crane and Titlist (yea Viscount!!). Campagnolo NR. On my 3 “modern” bikes (‘90s Cannondale, Specialized Allez, Nashbar T6000, mostly Shimano Deore with brifters or bar ends. Crossbar brake levers a plus. Currently playing around with Tannus airless tires. So there’s good stuff out there, I’m just not interested in carbon or more than 3x8 speed gearing. It’s all good, though, as currently I get to see the good, bad, and ugly. Overall, my fascination with Lambert and Viscount seems to have taken quite a hold in my bike mind as of late.
