My workspace is in the basement near the boiler. Heating is not a problem - lighting and ventilation, different story. Brian

You’ve seen pictures of my shed(s), they are both 6’x4’ and full to the roof. I don’t have a working space other than my garden which is why nothing gets done in the winter months. Swapped the tyres on the Dawes and trued the rear wheel a few weeks back, my hands were numb with the cold by the end of it.
I nearly invested in a large shed before winter set in, love working on bikes and have loads to do.

I'm just at the stage where I'm drawing it out on a pad. My shed is not much bigger than yours and absolutely chock full. My only outside work area is the tiled area you see in that picture of my bike bits, and like you I get almost nothing done in winter as it's too cold. Or on the days when I set up a bench or bike stand up outside ,you just as often have to quickly put them away when it starts to rain. I used to work in the house but I valued my marriage too much to keep doing that.

Interested to get some opinions and solutions. Thanks in advance My detached “garage” is I heated and full, my backyard has about 10 inches of snow and 28degF, back porch only partially enclosed, basement quite chilly. Last night I tensioned and trued two wheels on my portable truing stand in the living while watching Netflix. Mrs.W is a gem. Best, John “w”

Wouldn’t want anyone to think I’m taking unfair advantage. I did plead for mercy, though, assuring Mrs.W that said wheels were comprised of clean, new components. Best, John “w”

Haha, my Mrs puts up with the guitars, amps, soldering and whatever goes on but I think she’d have a fit I started servicing a bottom bracket in the house I’d love to install a burner in a working space/shed, I’d never be out of there with the radio on. Maybe a 10’x8’ shed would be just enough? Work bench at one end with a decent vice to begin with, it’s the way forward. I can see small cottage businesses thriving after this era. Working from home will no doubt be a way forward. Cycling is in a state of renaissance and doesn’t look like going away soon with all the emphasis on a ‘green’ push. There is definitely a market for vintage bicycles as well!

I have a shop some 100 feet from the house. I have several electric heaters but they take so long to warm the place up that it is a waste. By the time the shop gains 10 degrees, I am through working. I have considered a pellet stove; they make a lot of heat and are sort of cozy. We get a lot of bright days and the radiant energy takes the edge off. For now, if the shop is over 40 degrees Fahrenheit or so, I dress in warm clothes; any colder and I do something else.
Cheers Jim

As J"W", I am blessed with a parter who is prepared to tolerate some domestic disruption when the garage, shed and garden turn chilly. (Though it's neither as cold nor as picturesque here in Solihull as Jim's place!) I did, however, wait until my ever-patient wife had gone out to work this morning before setting up 'shop' in our kitchen/dining room. Kitchen workshop by RMT@261, on Flickr If anyone's interested, the bike is a 1970s/80s Raleigh Chloe that is in lovely condition, having hardly been ridden. My neighbour has asked me to give it a good tidy up for his 25 year-old daughter, who has taken a shine to her Aunt's old bike. I'm having great fun with it.

I rebuilt my “garage” roof in the form of a New England saltbox, with the long side facing south. I toyed with the idea for years with the thought of building some homemade solar collectors for heating. Would be a decent thing to do in light of the current thinking. Best, John “wheelson”
