Last fall I took apart some project bikes and refurbished the components while I could work with solvents and hoses outside, making several kits ready to assemble. Here is the latest one off the stand. I believe it is a 1976 Viscount Gran Sports. I kept the Shimano brake levers and calipers, although I'm not sure they are original. The bottom bracket shell is threaded and the original BB was badly worn so I ground out the Viscount-signature protruding tubes and installed a Shimano UN300 cartridge BB. I also kept the headset, stem, and seat post. The other components came from a donor 1975 Motobecane Grand Touring - Suntour V-GT Luxe RD, Suntour Comp-V FD, Suntour Power ratchet shifters, Suntour Perfect 5 (14-32) freewheel, Shimano Tourney crankset, Weinmann rims, Normandy hubs (English threaded fortunately), Atom pedals. New chain, mirror, cloth bar tape with 7 coats of shellac (one too many it turns out), Bontrager Arvada saddle, Zefal half toe clips.
I might have to replace the rims. They looked OK on inspection but during truing after I rebuilt the wheels I discovered that both rims must have hit the same railroad track and left a flat spot that will probably drive me crazy. If I otherwise like the bike, I'll probably get some new alloy rims and rebuild the wheels again.
