Another great female cyclist was multiple world champion Beryl Burton, whose peak years were in the 1960s, so a bit later than Eileen Sheridan. Unlike Sheridan, Beryl never turned pro. Beryl was born in Morley, just south of Leeds, which is where I played rugby when I first moved to Yorkshire, and slater moved to Harrogate, which is adjacent to where I now live.
Beryl died of heart failure while riding her bike in 1996: apparently she wasriding around delivering invitations to her 59th birthday party to friends. She's commemorated here by a section of the Nidderdale Greenway from Knaresborough to Harrogate named "Beryl Burton Way". It's very convenient for avoiding the busy A59.
There's a 2 hour film about her that isn't freely available (but is available as a DVD), but also a short (about 20-minute) film made for Yorkshire TV about 10 years before her death that is available via YouTube. Check out

Yes, she’s an absolute legend. Probably edges Eileen to be our greatest female cyclist, in her day she beat some of the top blokes in TT’s as well. A bloke in my old cycle club took part in a team time trial with her. She dragged the boys around and gave a right bollocking to the one that was dropped.

Thanks for the links - there's my viewing sorted on this grey, grotty afternoon

Grey and grotty? - Bright sunshine up here, reflecting off the 8cm of snow we had yesterday. Unfortunately the state of the roads rather precludes getting out on the bike, so it looks like a session on the turbo trainer is the only option.

I love sun and snow...might be in for some down here tomorrow.
