I came across this amazing video. It seems some brave soul hopped a freight train in Bakersfield California and rode it to Barstow California. The route traverses the Tehachapi Pass (near where I live) and continues into the Mojave desert. The changes in topography are amazing. It has nothing to do with bikes, but is great to watch.

Thanks for posting that, Jim. That took me back to the 70s when I was riding my original Viscounts. I occasionally hopped freight trains in FL and rode them through the state and surrounding states. No video back then and traveling light with no cameras, but the memories and images are etched in my brain.
I posted the first few sentences while 10 minutes into watching it and it really is amazing what a little courage and an HD camera can provide.
He has other videos of rides including one which showed an area near where my parents lived in Hobe Sound, FL where I used to bike. What a cool You Tube Channel.
