I haven’t Jim but considered using one with a long cage derailleur to clear the large cog (38T) on the Suntour freewheel.
The guy in the LBS isn’t keen on them but I’m sure plenty of people use them.

Jim, I’ve tried the Wolf Tooth extender successfully on two occasions. First on my brother-in-law’s Schwinn Circuit when he went from 42-30 gearing with a Suntour Sprint short cage. Second on the shop owner’s aluminum Trek road bike for lower gearing. Highly recommended. Best, John “wheelson”

In was reading about the Wolf Tooth Roadlink Extender that Wheelson mentioned. It says the extender does not increase the RD's chain wrap, which is an obvious fact I would not have thought of in time. That got me thinking lower gearing in general. The answer would be changing over to mountain bike components if you can stand the way they look on the frames we like. I'm not there yet because I still like the vintage bikes to look original, but it might be fun to do up an antique frame with modern black MTB components for performance. Sort of like making a '55 Chevy street rod.

Sort of like making a '55 Chevy street rod. Brian True about the Road Link, it basically increases the derailleur’s drop so that the upper pulley clears the increased diameter rear sprocket. As far as low gear classic derailleurs and cranksets, it’s hard to beat those Shimano Crane GS family (Titlist, Tourney), Suntour VGT,’s, Sugino AT and TA cranks. You can build a real mountain goat with these. That said, I’ve got nothing against hot ridding with modern stuff and plead guilty as charged. Best, John “wheelson”
