I’m on a retro thing at the moment, ELO, Roxy Music, 10cc... I use Spotify for convenience but have a lot of vinyl and an old bang & olufsen beogram. Saturday nights are vinyl night, Sunday mornings the radio. Music is always playing here

I listen in my shop while working on projects. You will laugh at what I like. Linda Rondstat, John Denver, Gordon Lightfoot, Peter Paul and Mary, James Taylor, Carol King, Bread, Chicago, Mamas and Papas and others. Sometimes, only 1950s rock will do.

Is this one, two, or three guitars? Nope, it is the ultimate guitar SOLO. Talk about economy of motion:

I listen to everything from acid rock to Gregorian Chant and military band music. This week I've been listening to a variety of versions of Allegri's Miserere. I also spent some time looking into the really interesting history of this polyphonic work and how Mozart was involved in its introduction to those outside of the Sistine Chapel.

I am into a lot of different kinds of music. As a youngster , it was strictly rock, pop, folk and punk.As I've aged I've started to appreciate most kinds of music, but I will still occasionally put a '45 on the deck, last one was London Calling by The Clash. Here below I have one of my oldest records on my deck (Phillips Electronic 312 ) - Abbey Road by The Beatles, that was kept at my house by my cousin when I was about 4 years old, as we had a record player and she didn't. It's still a regular on the deck. I appreciate the ease of digital and on-line music, but really enjoy the 'ceremony' and nostalgia of putting a vinyl on and hearing the 'thunk' as needle hits plastic. I have a big collection, but decided to let all but my most prized ones go in the next few months I think (no room for them). If I wanted to put a play-list on in the car now, it's odds-on going to be things like English bands of the late 70's early 80's, soul from the classic era , maybe with Steve Cropper on guitar, some Jazz or big band , something with a melody, Beach Boys, Bruce Springsteen, Bowie mid to late 70's, some 'real' country music (not the modern stuff), Hank Williams, Gram Parsons and/or Emmylou Harris. Bob Dylan never loses his appeal for me and i could play 'Blood on the Tracks' every day and not get bored by that. (just picked up the vinyl version of the official demo's and out-takes of that album) I like the classic blues guitarists and can't find a bad BBKing album despite looking for one. Having got Apple Music a year or so back allows me to check out new music and things I wouldn't normally discover - new bands and obscure things I wouldn't buy before. I am of the opinion that all the best music has been made already though. I know that's a bit pessimistic, but I just can't see anything in the last 20 years that can equal anything in the previous 50. IMG_5138 by

I went to see the Carol King Musical a couple of years ago Jim, absolutely wonderful. I can heartily recommend it. If you don't have it, can I also recommend her 'legendary Demo's' album ? Just Carol on the piano with songs from the early days (Take Good Care of my Baby, Natural Woman , Pleasant Valley Sunday etc ) and then almost all of Tapestry in demo form, which is hard to beat. Sometimes stripping a song right down is a way of seeing genius hit you on the nose all over again , more so than the fuller orchestrated versions.

Some good points there Jem. Playing vinyl is definitely more of a ritual compared to using something like iTunes, I also genuinely think it sounds warmer. You’ve got a point about modern music as well, my missus was playing something on the piano the other day and it sounded like a 1970’s song (can’t remember which now) but it was something that was in the charts recently. Common chord progressions, melody lines, hooks... it’s difficult to write anything truly original after seventy years of popular music.

Good one, Brian. It brings on some of my Western North Carolina heritage. A lot of those "old time" mountain musicians are self-taught. My older brother was a quite good guitarist, self-taught. I like most everything and I do mean everything. Being a teen in the '60s, a lot of classic rock comes to mind, yes, a lot of the "British Invasion". My son plays guitar, piano, and sax, the latter in high school and then in a Swing Band. My daughter plays piano, guitar, and flute. Mrs.W plays the piano. Me? nothing! But there's almost always music playing in the house, in the car, at the shop.
Best, John "wheelson"

Love the banjo video. What comes to mind when I hear it is Leo Kottke and John Fahey. I remember hunting everywhere for the obscure Tacoma record label Leo Kottke "Six and Twelve String Guitar" album back in high school. Classic John Fahey acoustic guitar on "The Transfiguration of Blind Joe Death" album with beautiful cover art. Both still sound as good as the day they were released.
Currently moved my riding indoors on my wind trainer. I don't like "training" videos, so my go to is scenic cab view train rides with cd's of Sprinsteen in the background. Currently rotating Tunnel of Love, Ghost of Tom Joad, and The Rising. Something about a harmonic and a train that keeps me anchored to my stationary Aerospace GP which was $40 EBay pickup about 1 1/2 yrs ago. No worry about the fork while hooked up to the wind trainer!

I’m a big Hendrix fan and nearly bought a Strat this weekend but after watching Buchanan I’ll stick with my Telecaster! Amazing player.

The bad weather has stopped me working on bikes and need something to focus on. Franco -I haven't picked up the guitar in a long time. Strange , as I have more time on my hands now than ever. I even thought about selling one of them the other day as they aren't being played. I 'play' the piano most days. I say 'play', my fingers make contact with the keys and they make a sound, and in my mind I am playing songs. haha Something about the acoustics of the piano and the ease of just sitting down, rather than getting my guitar out of the case, find the cable, get the amp warmed up etc. Also, I have learned more about music theory in a year or 2 of piano than in the 30 previous years on the guitar. That has been an eye opener. I had no real idea what I was doing on the guitar despite making a nice noise at times. Although a friend of mine ,who I was in a band with a while back, has just sent me some songs he's written and in days gone by, I would load them up on my laptop and add my guitar track to it and some other bits. So, if we get some snow next week, as I see on the weather app, then I might get the guitar out and set up the mini-studio.

I get what you’re saying, I probably didn’t pick mine up in a whole year, which surprised me considering the extra spare time. Probably the same reasons, find the cables, the right fx pedal I want... Its good that you’ve found more reward with piano though. You never know though, adding guitar tracks to your friends songs might spark an interest again. Listening to artists like Buchanan and Hendrix recently has given me some inspiration again

Here's another one that might give some inspiration - Jesse Ed Davis. Someone I desperately tried to imitate on Tele , with his buttery smoothness. He makes it look effortless.
I think if I could wave a magic wand and sound like anyone , it would be Jesse-Ed
This is the best rock performance in the whole of this Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus in my opinion

Cool stuff, that singer has a huge voice as well. How about Danny Gatton? One of the comments made me laugh “this guy plays more chords and licks in this song than some have on entire albums”

Or going back to Punk/New Wave. I can blag my way through some Hendrix stuff with a Fuzz pedal but that clean fingerpicking stuff some of the Tele players do is beyond me.
