I used to think that these modelling amps were somehow just not that good and a bit gimmicky, but I now have to revise that opinion. Given the ridiculously low price on these used Fender Mustangs, it makes it not only a great bargain but it's an outright superb amp. Admittedly there are 100 pre made presets stored and 80 of them are pretty overblown and awful, but you can tweak them and save using the screen interface or usb connection to computer. I am pretty certain that even guitarists couldn't tell the difference from the amps it emulates (e.g. valves,) when listening - but as a player, I can tell that its not a valve amp due to the 'feel' of it when playing but not in terms of sound. It's 100watts so loud enough to play pretty much anywhere (I can top our drummer with master volume on about 3!). It also has an aux in and headphones out so can be played when everyone in the house is asleep. It came with a 4 button foot switch and you can access any preset with the touch of a pedal. They do a I, II, III IV and V, from 25w up to 250w and have an online community who share and swap presets. Untitled by Sooper 8, on Flickr

What kind of music do you play? That's real interesting.

What kind of music do you play? That's real interesting. Well, personally I am into the RnB and soul thing style (Stax, Steve cropper Cornell Dupree, Jesse Ed Davis), with a bit of country funk thrown in, but in the band we only play original material and the songs range from things that sound like Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, to The Waterboys, to punk and bluesy type rock bordering on Led Zep; then very english kind of stuff like the Kinks and The Beatles. My favourite guitarists are George Harrison, Robbie Robertson of The Band and those guys who played in the sessions for all the 60's and 70's soul music.

I like pedal steel guitar, I don't know if that is played much over there.
I like virtually all kinds of music like everyone, I get in moods.
I know I've watched videos of a Johnny Cash tribute show of some bloke in the UK, well done.

Bill Kirchen who did that Hot Rod Lincoln riff if one knows that song with Commander Cody is currently touring England. www.redhouserecords.com/shows/2544Here he teaches how he played that riff, from 45 years ago. Of course, CC and the LPA did not originate the song but they did have success with it.

I love pedal steel and looked into buying one, but they are so expensive and quite complex to fix up and maintain I believe .
I missed seeing Bill in the UK last year , he only played a couple of dates, but I am off to check out that link now thank you, I like his style!
Here's another great Flying Burritos tune
And one of Gram's best with some great pedal steel..

Thanks for your responses Sooper8, Tip of the Hat, I do know the Gram Parsons' FBB music fairly well and his own records. I guess it is like a lot of music, I've heard it very often and now, often search out other music I don't know as well. Speaking of Steel Guitars and we see bikes on Craig's list, here is a steel guitar someone is selling and yes, expensive.. (relatively I suppose), maybe it is something I will start keeping an eye on though, one never knows. Beyond my budget unless I was really undertaking it seriously, I could shore up the funds. Of course, one shouldn't jump at the first thing one sees. minneapolis.craigslist.org/hnp/msg/5986968984.htmlWe have a general all-musical instruments store here as well. One never knows... but at times, I've really loved some good steel guitar. I did not know they were so expensive. I've also liked saxophones and certainly other instruments. (I hope it breaks no ad rules to list the above). Just looking around. The photos give a good idea though of what those things look like.

That was such a fortuitous posting about Bill Kirchen, thank you. I got 2 of the last 14 tickets to see him play live this Saturday night, less than an hour from where I live. In fact his tour virtually passes by my house, and I could have seen him Friday night not far away too.
I'm off work today, the sun is shining and I'm off to see Bill on Saturday night...yeehaa. Pity my van just failed it's MOT this morning and needs a little bit of welding and the brakes fixing. But all in all a good week - I might even get out on my bike if the wind drops and it keeps dry.

Interesting that there is a specific amp for the steel guitar in that advert in Minneapolis on Craigslist. I didn't know that.

Just thought I'd update this by saying that Bill Kirchen was absolutely superb last night. He rocked and he rolled and got the sweetest sounds from his guitar. Austin De Lone was tinkling the ivories and he has a soulful voice - the rhythm section were from the UK and really complimented the band, and the bass player added perfect harmony vocals to it. That's amazing Sooper8.
I was watching his videos and I see he did a state fair near me.
I have a few of his CDs too. I really enjoy that style of country. Current country for the most part, I don't care for but his niche, I do appreciate.

That's why I asked Old Tehachapi about his home town, close to Bakersfield; Bakersfield has a whole sound of its own.
Bill Kirchen has done a few songs from there, by Tommy Collins mainly, "Roll Truck Roll", "Prison Band" just for starters and I know he has a more current song that is a tribute to Merle Haggard.

I think I am right in saying Bill has a track called 'The Hound of the Bakersfield'...great play on words.
We have mentioned the Bakersfield sound before on this form before too.
I love Merle Haggard (he's Bakersfield right?)

Bill's record company seems to be that Red House records located in St. Paul, MN. I watched a video of him playing at the MN (Minnesota) State Fair on youtube. So, maybe he hits the Midwest from time to time.

He played this one on Saturday night...still sounds great after all this time. I love the way he approaches it.
