Nearly finished one project so bought a bike to start another
link
Lugged Viscount Grand Prix in sky blue On first glance and to be fair its not bad, original 1978 July, Crank, DR's, bars etc Paint isn't bad but The previous keeper (not owner as an owner wouldn't cut off the pump pegs - gone) so rebraze pegs at £22 or file down and cover or Strip and start again, Advice Please Bike has original SR crank, union pedals, Altus LT DR's and that hideous viscount rat brown saddle thinking of dark metallic purple with silver head, then badge up again Camera out at the weekend for a few before and after before fettling gets underway

Nice project! A rebraze will cook a lot of paint. If you want to preserve the original paint, I think your only option is to file down and touch up. I like the sky blue; the accent decals are probably irreplaceable. What is most important, is that the bike pleases you! As for me, I tend to keep the original paint but only if it is in reasonably good condition. If I repaint, I might use the original scheme and color; but only if I like it. If not, I may tweak the scheme to fit my taste while trying to maintain the "flavor" of the original. Then again, I sometimes just paint it the way I like it. I am looking forward to photos as you progress.
Good Luck With The Build Jim

I like the handlebar ribbon, whatever that kind is called. That's probably difficult to save too, I see it is unraveling. I might try to preserve that but that's a sensitive subject. It depends on what is best for your hands.
Quite a lovely bike as it is. One might remember that. The picture really doesn't show much as far as dings or rust or anything.

Nice bike, in fact it the same as the one I have. Unfortunately my paint work was not as good so I opted to respray. The sky blue colour was very difficult to replicate so would advise you to keep it as it is. Also the grand prix decals on the top tube were also very hard to find, in the end I had to get them specially made. Good luck with the project.

proaktive52,
It looks as though the original powder coating could be in pretty good condition, though you might need to re-embed the link to your 'before' photos, as the current link is just re-opening the forum page.
For my two penn'orth, I'd carry on carefully dismantling until you get down to just the frame with fork, headset and bottom bracket still in place. If the headset and b/b still run reasonably smoothly, I'd stop there and get out some gentle paint renovator (I've used Autoglym auto paint renovator with some success). Try rubbing out as many of the scuffs and dried-up glues, oils etc. as you can, being particularly gentle around the decals, then rub some polish or wax over the whole lot. If the frame and forks come up looking reasonably tidy after that, and you can touch up any minor imperfections, you can probably save yourself the best part of £150 on respray/powdercoat and rare replacement decals and, potentially, even avoid disturbing the b/b and headset, though these aren't a major challenge to replace/refurbish. Put your £150 towards a Brooks B17 saddle, some comfortable handlebar tape and a pair of Panaracer Pasela tyres. They can all make a real difference to how the bike feels to ride.
But in the end, as with all these things, do what makes you feel happy. Good luck with it.
