I was riding this bike, while doing errands today, when I suddenly found myself riding past this bike: The guy has swapped out his saddle, seat post and pedals, all else seems to be original. I waited a few minutes, but no one showed up, so I have no more information. Aside from size it's nearly identical to mine. Don't see that very often, especially around here. Frank

Two nice 40 year old bikes still going strong. Nice! I'm looking at the 2 pics and it looks like old guy vs young guy setup with the difference in saddle to handlebar drop. I'm sure you're the one with the comfortable ride. Nice bike Frank!

That 'Zebra' handlebar tape is bonkers!!
And, look at the difference between saddle top and bars - ouch! Still, I wish I could ride with that set up rather than my creaking back induced arrangement.
Two 'GPs' together. How nice is that?
Frank, your GP is gorgeous!!
Regards
Steve

Well, you both noticed the difference in bar-to-saddle heights. I'm pretty old school about positioning, and I've seen NO pics of Coppi or Bartali, etc. riding with 15 cm from saddle to bars. When racing I ran a larger gap than now, but 7-8 cm was my most radical positioning. The pista was different, but the velodrome is different.
Anyway, thank you gents, that's praise from the praiseworthy. Steve, if you want and can't get zebra tape there, let me know, it's everywhere around here. Also, like you, I have the creaking back. Sciatica, about 30 years ago, and it still tweaks me occasionally. (expletive deleted.)
Thank you for the compliment, but aside from the good condition of it's paint and decals, my GP is nothing to speak of. I have not cleaned it up very much. This is on purpose - it's my errand bike, in Chicago, and I want that thief deterred by the strange looking and obviously grungy wheels, cranks, etc. But the fenders (mudguards) fit very well, better than on any previous bike. I keep dreaming that I need another, just like it, that I can clean to my heart's content, polish brilliantly, put a leather saddle on it, perhaps leather tape, etc.
Sigh.
The finishing touch, of course, is the fork decal. Thanks for making those Steve. Stella, if you're out there, thank you for sending a few my way.
Frank
