Hello all, I am new to the forum and had just recently purchased at 70s viscount! I think it is the aerospace gp, not a bad buy in my opinion. I am looking to get some good use out of it, any suggestions on what I should do as far as maintenance is concerned. I took it out for a decent spin Last night and I noticed several things. One my bb was squeaking when I was peadaling hard. Two, I am having a difficult time shifting smoothly and having it stay in the gear I am putting it in, I had tightened up the shifters but it still won't hold. Again, just trying to learn all I can, thanks again! Tell me what you thinkcontent://media/external/file/58265 Sorry if the picture didn't post correctly will fix later

Hi. Welcome to the forum. I'm sure you will find the answers you need here. Some pictures would be good. You can upload photos from your laptop or other device quite easily (assuming you have registered on the forum, but I guess you have), but you are limited to three per post and 1MB each. Please feel free to do this, although the more experienced link to on-line sources like Flickr, to avoid using up the forum's free allocation of web space. Admin can provide detailed advice on posting photos and the advice is on the forum somewhere, but basically you put your photos on an on-line service such as Flickr and copy and paste the link into your post. If the bb is squeaking (check that the crank isn't loose, could be a pedal in need of grease as well) you might need to replace the bb bearings. I think a 70s GP will have the press fit bearing units. These are standard commercial items, available from many sources and costing only a few dollars/pounds/Euros. However, the old ones can be a b*gg*r to shift. One of the members has devised an amazing tool for removing Viscount bbs. If you are in the UK and able to get to DFR4 (see thread) it is possible you could arrange for an in-field service with them. I have written a bit about replacing bbs on a blog, but my method is rather rough and ready: viscount-lambert-bikes.blogspot.co.uk/2011/02/replacing-viscount-bottom-bracket.htmlWith regard to shifting problems, it's hard to give advice without seeing at least a photo. Viscounts were often fitted with first generation Dura Ace rear derailleurs - Cranes - which are good and durable, but they can get bent in crashes. It's possible the shift levers have lost their friction? Or it could be a matter of cleaning, adjustment and alignment. Good luck!
