Through a convoluted process, I have acquired a 1990 Specialized Allez Epic. As a carbon tube bike, it is interesting and (like my aluminum Treks) a great representation of the short lived transition from steel (my first love) to today's modern carbon fiber monocoque bikes. It has an appealing no nonsense look about it. The Shimano 105 group is good, but plain Jane. I will post a small photo and the link to where it is found on pedal room www.pedalroom.com/bike/1990-specialized-allez-epic-28212Is it lighter than my Viscount? I weighed them both, make your guess. I will reveal the truth in a later post.Attachment DeletedCheers Jim

Well..that is a good question Jim.
I would instinctively have said the Specialized. But just due to the fact that you are asking, makes me think we might have a surprise on our hands.
I don't really know much about carbon tube (certainly never ridden one), so I can't say with any real reference point.. so I will say the Specialized shaves it but only by a small amount...

Jim, I'm going to venture a guess the Allez comes in at about 21 lbs with Viscount at 22 lbs. My carbon Kestrel 500 sci weighed in at somewhere between 22-23 lbs from what I can remember. Aero tubing was supposed to be an advantage at the same weight but not so much at my typical speed and setup.
Cheers, Michael

Before I sold my Viscount and my LOOK carbon fiber bike I weighed them.... not even close
The 24.5" Viscount ASP with everything stock except Saddle, Mavic Rims and 27x1" Paselas was 24.5 lbs.
My LOOK KG56, 25" carbon fibre w/ aluminum lugs and standard alloy components & clinchers was 21.75 lbs.
The death fork was heavier than almost all the 531 and Chro-Moly forks I compared it with.

Is it lighter than my Viscount? I weighed them both, make your guess. I will reveal the truth in a later post. Thanks for the fun input! The answer , yes and no, it depends on how it is equipped. I have a very nice Park digital scale which was used for these weights (all in pounds, kg was calculated). With the exception of the new carbon monocoque frame, my various frames only varied by a few ounces. The components used in the build are most of the weight. A few frames Frame (wo fork) Lbs KgCannondale System Six 2lbs 11oz 1.22 Trek 2000 4lbs 2oz 1.87 Bertoni 4lbs 5oz 1.96 Viscount 4lbs 3oz 1.90 The Bikes Carbon Monocoque (with aluminum rear triangle)• The weight of my Cannondale System Six with Ultegra compact 10 speed, aluminum cockpit, 200gm saddle, and Clinchers is, 18lbs 08oz, 8.39kg Carbon Tube• The weight of my Specialized Allez Epic with Shimano 105 group, 200gm saddle and clinchers is, 22lbs 6oz, 10.15kg 7000 series Aluminum• The weight of my Trek 2000 with Dura Ace 7400 group, 200gm saddle and tubular tires is, 20lbs 4oz, 9.12kg• The weight of my Trek 1500 (same frame as 2000) with Ultegra triple group, 350gm saddle and clincher tires is, 22lbs 12oz, 10.32kgColumbus SL Steel• The weight of my Bertoni (Columbus SL) with Campagnolo Nuovo Record (tripilized) heavy 450gm saddle, and Clinchers is, 22lbs 5oz, 10.12kgViscount Steel• The weight of my Viscount with heavy death fork, triple drive train (Shimano Crane and TA), titanium BB, heavy 545gm saddle and clincher tires is, 23lbs 12oz, 10.78kg• The weight of my Viscount if built with a Kinesis lightweight aluminum fork replacing the heavy death fork and 200 gm saddle would be, 22lbs 13oz, 10.35kg• The weight of my Viscount (with death fork) if built with a the same Dura Ace components as the Trek 2000 would be, 22lbs 6oz, 10.15kg (equal to the Specialized Epic with Shimano 105)This was a great diversion while preparing my taxes. It seems to me that despite being of similar construction, the Look KG56 is a good deal lighter than the Allez Epic. Perhaps if it were built with Dura Ace instead of 105, it would be closer. Still have a CF LeMond that weighs about a pound less than the LOOK: LeMond
The LeMond feels and rides light, but to me, the LOOK didn't. I was quite surprised when I weighed the LOOK.

I think that could be the strap line for this forum. I often read a post or two when I really perhaps should be doing some work related task.

I am checking the forum, so I am still working on my taxes! If one were to walk past my office, they might hear me shout "THE GOVERNMENT WANTS HOW MUCH?"

The final verdict; I stripped to Allez Epic to bare frame. The bare frame weighs 3lbs 4oz, which is 15ounces lighter than the Viscount bare frame (4lbs 3oz). All things being equal, you can save nearly a pound.
