In the documentary "Slaying the Badger" Greg LeMond and Andy Hampstien implied that at the time of their retirement, a clean rider was not competitive. Since they wanted to remain clean, they retired. When LeMond was asked about Lance Armstrong's performance, he replied "unbelievable" which to some has now become code word for suspecting someone of drug use.
Like many others, I bought into Lance being some kind of superman and believed his claims of being clean. Sadly, it turns out he was fastest cheater, among many cheaters. I must read the book, and am looking forward to the movie.
