Took the sport out again for a club TT. Think I've improved on my PB hopefully dipped under 28:41. Didn't turn my Garmin off straight away so not sure. This course is a bit slower than the one the PB was set on so I'm fairly happy. connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/773476847

Yeah, was a good night. Actually not sure if I was really trying hard enough. Felt I could have gone faster.

Wow, you guys on these 20mph averages really leave me feeling worn out. Good effort Kev!
I was out tonight , and for me , I was really pushing it and averaged 14.46mph. I did just under 10 miles.
I was on my Aerospace sport, which with a BB that Bustaste fitted, rides like a dream and couldn't be any smoother- so only my lack of fitness to 'blame'.

I'm on the sport but with tubular tyres pumped up to 120psi. It certainly rolls well. Reasonably flat course so my 11-16 free wheel worked ok too.

Kev, great to see you've equalled your PB on a 'slower' course.
Big slap on the back from me - and hope to see a new PB sometime this year.

Kev, congratulations on the PB! The season is young and I'll bet that time gets smashed SOON!

You're running an ELEVEN X SIXTEEN freewheel? ? With 42 x 52 rings up front? I can't even think about that. The 12 x 52 on mine is only there because the 12-20 was in the parts bin. Monster gears. You have my utmost respect. And a great ride, on those monster gears. Nice work.

Cheers Roadie, 42 / 52 up front so not exactly ideal for hills... It's a great freewheel for fairly flat TT's as little between each gear so easier to maintain cadence. Looking at your last TT time I'd say we are fairly similar in speed. Nice we gave Viscounts competing on both sides of the ocean now.

How fast would I have to be to be able to not feel spiritually crushed if I were to ry a TT Kev? I managed seventeen and a half mph over ten miles yesterday with 600 ft of climbing and for the first time ever I came back quite fancying giving TT a go. This was in the middle of a longer ride, so I think there might be a bit more speed to be had without extra suffering.

Pick a flatish course and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how well you'll do. All the climbing will have built up your stamina. You'll just have to remember to pace yoyrself, otherwise,it's blow up time! I'm sure you'll do well. Try 10's first. Best of luck. Cheers, Pete.

Had an impromptu TT of sorts last weekend, coming back up the bike path on the last 4 1/2 mile stretch. I was exchanging pleasantries with a fellow on the virtues of my Viscount Pro as we casually glided along, he on a Specialized S-Works carbon rig. He suddenly decides he's had enough with a "Nice talking with you" and puts it into high gear. I, feeling just a bit disrespected and wanting to show him what the bike can do jumped onto his tail and stayed there going 20+ MPH. Doing great till I couldn't shift into a bigger gear quick enough and I got dropped. Knowing I didn't want to disappoint myself (and Viscount Nation) I bore down and stayed between 22 and 24MPH topping out at 25.1MPH and caught him with about 1/2 mile to go. Surprise!
When I was in my 20's I used to love to see what I could do on my Viscount when I saw a fancy rider go by. To quote Bob Seger, "I'm older now but still running against the wind" or even better said by Yogi Berra, "It's deja vu all over again".
Cheers, Michael

You'll be lots faster in a 10 mile TT, I'd think you wouldn't have too much trouble beating 20mph. It's quite a buzz and I'd recommend it. I've forgotten where you live, but you're welcome to come along to one of my local club TT's if you like.

Frank, this may sound like I need a shrink but I fluctuate between both of those guys! I need my Trek Madone (maybe mentally) when racing but since last year I'm piling up more training miles on the Viscounts than the Trek....and loving it. I think the quicker shifting of the STI's may be the reason I race on the Trek more than anything else. Now that I'm in the 60-64 age group, I need every advantage I can get.
Note: I was close to blowing up on the bike path chase so its good it ended right there!
Kevin, my philosophy is that if you don't make yourself a burden on someone else, you don't have to grow up!

Michael,I hear you loud and clear. I love my CF Defy, and I love my steel Viscount, Paramounts, Superior and Gitane. Caught and passed a 20 something rider on Monday who was in full racing kit from a local team, loved it. He passed me after a bit, then we played leap frog for a couple of miles, as I was not going to let him get away. FUN, totally. Kids think they've got it all.
We need a new word. The "old man passed me and I couldn't hang" equivalent of "getting chicked."
After that first TT I rode on the Viscount with down tube shifters, I understand the shifting thing on your Trek. It was actually hard to take a hand off the aero bar and negotiate a shift, feather it correctly and get back on the extension.
Good rides to all! Frank

If you're using aero,or tri bars, use friction bar end shifters. Noneed to move out of the aero tuck for gear changing or trimming. I think I may have mentioned this before? Bar end shifters are fairly expensive, but,so are brifters! Cheers, Pete.

Hi Pete,
Yes, I think I'll give some Sun Tours with the light ratchets a try next season. But that means I'll have to save weight elsewhere to keep it down close to 19 lb. Hmmm, that Ti crank spindle is looking better all the time...

Another club 10 mile TT on the Sport this evening. Faster course and a light wind so conditions not too bad. Very happy as did a new PB of about 28.03 ( awaiting the results ), this is about 38 seconds faster than my last PB :-) A friend / one of the faster riders even said "I don't know how you make that bike go like that!" connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/786681191

Whippet, congratulations on your ride. I hope you found your PB to be satisfying.
Pete, they both hurt. Body and Wallet. That money belongs in the retirement fund, but it's cheaper than psychotherapy. (No national healthcare here in America, unfortunately.) Beating the body is part of the do-it-yourself therapy, thereby proving that, in all likelihood, you're right; I am barking mad.
I've got another TT coming up on the same course as last time. 15 miles, Monday evening. Wish me luck.

When I had my first problem with reality(well what some people think of it),I couldn't stand crowds, understandable,or going over motorway bridges. The medicos were their usual selves, worse than useless. All they were bothered about was if I was going to kill myself! No,I just want to get on with a fairly normal life. None of it stopped me riding my bike. I just had to close my eyes and pedal like hell to cross those noisy bridges ASAP! One of the shrinks I saw asked me to name a few British Prime Ministers,I named them all from 1945.He hadn't heard of most of them! Daft question then, says I. After all this rubbish, they reckoned it was all down to work related stress, and generally overdoing things. He was really chuffed when I said that he'd never have to worry about that. Sorry to have rambled, but, you can sometimes be better off with just DIY therapy. Good luck with your TT self torture. Cheers, Pete.
