Just got back from testing the Aerospace GP in anticipation of DRF8. It needs some work, most notably new rims. Those 45 year old Birmalux single wall rims are almost played out. I can't keep them flat and round for long. Does anyone know of a quality 27" alloy rim? I have used the Sun CR-18 box section rims on a few bikes and they are pretty good, especially for the price (about $25 each.) They are super strong but not the lightest rims. Any suggestions on high quality rims would be appreciated. I'd like to stay with 27" instead of converting to 700C. I don't think my brakes will reach and I might use the same wheel set on several bikes.
About the noise scare: During my checkout ride I was descending a winding hill through the woods at maybe 30 mph when I started hearing a metallic plink, plink, plink at two second intervals and growing louder. Since this is a Viscount, it could have been almost anything from an incipient crank or stem failure to a previously unknown frame defect. I immediately slowed as I rounded a curve, where I saw someone splitting a log with a wedge and maul. Quite a relief.
Also crossed the 3000 mile mark for the year.

Concerning the 700c option, I discovered the reach from the front fork wasn’t enough on the Aerospace 400 but it worked on the chrome steel fork on the Aerospace Sport. Same reach centre pull calipers on both. The 700c back wheel was fine on both models
It’s worked out well for me as I now have the newer 27” wheels on the bike I use the most.
It’s also made me consider buying a new set of 27” wheels for the Pro and forgetting the idea of rebuilding the Birmalux wheels. They’re old and tired and there’s something reassuring about having a new set of wheels on an older bike.

I took off the Sun CR-18 wheels I had built a while back from a Raleigh Super Course and put them on the Aerospace GP and didn't have to adjust anything - brakes or even the RD limits. It is much better. I am running Normandie high flange cup and cone hubs now instead of the refurbished Viscount cartridge bearing hubs, which is a bit of a shame. I took it out and back to my daughter's (35 miles RT) to babysit two grandchildren today and made note of some minor problems. A few more tweaks and the Aerospace will be fit to ride anywhere.

I was hanging on every word to find out what the 'plink plink plink' was. Relief!!!

I was waiting to know what it was as well.
Had something similar, an intermittent ping coming from a front wheel. It hadn’t been used for years and I’d trued it up a few days before so thought it was just the spokes settling in with the tension, but it was getting worse. Turned out it was dry bearings in the hub. I should have checked them first really but it spun freely, replaced them and it’s fine now.

I had one. Strange regular sort of clicking noise. It was getting louder. In the middle of nowhere. Well, not quite, deeply rural Scotland, as I came round the bend I could see, and hear, the roofers on the cottage roof, tapping in the nails to hold the slates. Phew! Gave them a grateful wave and got a cheery greeting back.

Talking of noises whilst riding, a friend asked me if I wanted a Matex Tour cyclometer for 27” wheels, he found it in his grandads old shed, new in the packaging. I fitted it today and realised I’m going to hear a constant tick with it.

Won't it make it sound like your bike has death watch beetle (but not in the forks obvs) or as if you are being pursued by Blind Pew?

Haha, it’s not too bad mate tbh, thought I’d give it a go for a tenner, nostalgia and all that!

I think I had a cyclometer like that about 40 years ago until it was superseded by the revolutionary technology of the belt-driven Huret Multito.
Franco, from your photo it doesn't look like your axle nut has much bite. That could lead to some noises for sure, both mechanical and human.

Thanks Brian, it’s three quarters on but I know what you mean. I might take a spacer nut from the inside... the wheels aren’t original but NOS and in great condition.
