New thread! DFR 2020 - the Covid edition? I think we did quite a bit of planning last year, although participation was a bit sparse (one person). Is it just a matter of selecting a date once we know when we will be out of lockdown and dusting off last year’s plans? For new readers, DFRs usually take place in the English Midlands over a weekend in June/July. The main ride is on Saturday, with the start/finish point being at some campsite. Some participants stay overnight and may ride on Sunday as well. Saturday distance about 25 miles with at least one pub or cafe stop.

Do you have to own a Viscount with the DF to participate?

Do you have to own a Viscount with the DF to participate? Not at all. Obviously it’s good if you do bring one along, but any bike is fine. It might be possible for a spare Viscount to be found even.

Number 3 was from a camp site called Beehive not far out of the south western side of Burton on Trent - we rode past Catton Hall and had lunch in a pub in Wiitington called The Bell, or it might have been The Dog, or both? haha Fairly flat except the last bit

to whom it may concern: maybe for the next DFR [whenever that may be] we could locate somehow the "gold bike girl" [minus her shorts]; she must be out there somewhere...at least in her 60's or 70's as a special guest, maybe put some ads in papers or something? maybe award her some kind of prize[maybe spray a death fork with gold leaf..?!] or a refurbished bike if she is still riding...just thinking out loud...........?

Don’t forget that we had an international DFR in New York with me and Triitout in 2019 :-) We could have a multi-national, multi-regional DFR this year, just pick a date. We'll still be in the social distancing phase but that's ok since I don't know of another Viscount owner here in Western Pennsylvania USA.
I may have an honest-to-goodness death fork bike together soon, the chrome pseudo-Supabike, with a type 3 death fork. To make it even more interesting, it will be sporting a set of sewup (sprint) wheels built with super thin 15-17ga double butted vintage Redaelli spokes and Birmalux rims. This may end up being a Death Bike Ride instead of a DFR! I do have the blue unknown Viscount with steel fork as a back up just in case I decide not to push my luck, having hopefully survived the virus.
I would really like to be on that side of the pond, maybe for DFR 2021.
Best, John "wheelson"

A nice virtual multi DFR is a great idea John! Once a date is set by our European brethren, I'm sure we can make it happen here on the East Coast. I can think of at least you and I, Tom Brown and vfrman in Ct, Brian in Mass, and the former bike shop owner with the Viscount manual pdf. Who am I forgetting? It's good thing whippet and I were able to keep the streak going last year!

Can't think of anyone else in USA except oldroadietehachapi. I think he's in California and is sometimes on the CR forum. I'm in if all goes well with me, the virus, and the Viscount(s). I'll likely be on a rail trail rather than a road though. Best, John "wheelson"

How would the virtual DFR work? Maybe pick a time and duration when we would all be riding, then meet up virtually at the end of the ride? Count me in and let me know if I can be of help with any details.

A virtual hookup might have to be shared photos since time zones would make a real time hookup a bit hard to do. Still, I think this is a great idea and will certainly try to be in.
On a slightly different note, I know one can post a link to photos, but how is it possible to imbed photos as was done above? Inquiring minds want to know!

I’ve frequented a guitar forum for nearly 20 years and we’ve been having virtual meet-ups with the lockdown using the Zoom conferencing app. Not sure if it works on a smartphone though and would be difficult to do whilst riding. If it’s pictures I’m in.

Hi John - You have to post your photos up to an external 'host' who 'holds' the photos , then you grab a link from them and copy and paste that link into your post here on this forum. (the reason for the long winded approach is because this forum was free to set up and has no on-going costs - the downside being that we used up the space that came free with the site very early on in the forum's life span, and then had to go over to bringing pics in via this hosting & link method. It used to be pretty simple because there were a number of 'hosts' and they were free. Places such as Photobucket , who later then charged for the service. I use Flickr but they limited the number of photos they will host for you, but they are still the one I use. It's not the most intuitive interface but eventually you'd probably get to grips with it. I think I did a tutorial on here somewhere , I can find that and share it again. There might be newer places to host? I used Imgur for a while too as my son used it, but it was way too complex for me.

Thanks for the reply. I use Flickr and have posted links to an album in this forum but only the link showed up. In your earlier posts the photos, like the ones of the earlier DFR's, show up in the posts without clicking on a link. That's what has me confused. Do you just copy/paste the photo itself or link the actual photo rather than link an album? I should know this, guess I'm just spoiled using other forum hosts such as Google. Anyway, thanks a heap for any help you can give. Best, John "wheelson"

Best, John "wheelson" Hi John - Sorry I went back to the very basics there , but it's only one stage that you are missing...when you are on Flickr , you go to the bottom right of the photo and click on the arrow which is 'share photo' and then once into the next screen you select size picture (you can pick any size as it has no impact on the forum now we have no space left anyway) and then make sure you click the BBcode tab on top bar. Then copy that BBcode, and then once here on this forum , literally just paste that in your posting text boxes anywhere you want the picture to appear. There is another way with the tiny picture icons which is 'insert picture'...not sure if the difference, but the former will definitely work. It will look like this
But when you get here on this forum and into your posting, you do not need to be into the BBCode tab on the post (not sure why's or where-fors on that) Screenshot 2020-04-26 at 14.42.58 by Jeremy Biddulph, on Flickr

We haven't discussed this for over a month. Just chatting to some of my colleagues from work (in a virtual meeting - we are all working from home). Two of them are keen runners and told me about what running clubs and organisers of the big runs are doing during lock down.
One idea is a group run with everyone doing a particular distance at one time but on their own and then getting a medal. We could do the same for DFR8 and it could be genuinely international. An approximate time to start (the usual 10:30 followed by riding round in circles before leaving at nearer 11:00?) would need to be agreed and perhaps for a 'pub' stop. Those in different time zones would have to adapt - perhaps starting at UK lunch time would work? The pub stop might have to be a picnic stop unless people can find pubs doing takeouts; or serving, socially distanced, in gardens. Depending on the weather, people could have BBQs at home in the evening or in camper vans for greater verisimilitude.
Wouldn't need much organisation - just deciding on a date really. Posting routes that people intend to take would be good.
What do you think?

Great idea. How long should the route be? I'll start figuring out one I have not done yet.
It would be great if we could get as many ride photos as possible, much tougher solo than with a group.

You could set the distance to suit yourself. If I recall correctly, the physical DFRs have been around 20-25 miles (30 - 40km), although I think that a few of us took a scenic route / got lost on DFR6 and ended up doing about 30 miles / 50km.

I’d definitely participate, despite being a bit of a Luddite regarding technology, I don’t use GPS or any apps. Did use Strava to plan routes but that’s since been put behind a paywall.
There is a 25 mile route I sometimes do, could be tough on an old 10 speed mind but I’m in.
Any decent alternatives to Strava for posting our route up?

I use MapMyRide to track my rides - it's free to do that, but I've never used it to plan a route. Not sure if you can do that in the free version - they seem to have been whittling away at what you can do for free. robt uses the app quite a lot - he probably knows.
