I'm currently refitting a Viscount bottom bracket and it looks like the square-taper spindle I have does not take a metric crank bolt - an M8 bolt can only be screwed in partially before it proceeds no further, and I'm certainly not going to try and force it! So, I think that I need a pair of English/Imperial/US Standard threaded crank bolts (5/16th inch?).
My LBS doesn't have anything compatible in its old parts box, and there doesn't seem to be anything available on e-bay right now, so I'm wondering if anyone here can help me. (There's also the possibility that I might pick something up at the Sheffield bike jumble next month).
Any suggestions??

Hi dracco, If memory serves me correctly you need a BSF thread. It's a finer thread with less depth than a BSW thread bolt which is probably what you tried in and only goes in a bit. I remember having the same adventure with my Pro restoration a few years back. They are available here: britishfasteners.com/index.php . I remember buying the stainless steel bolt from them. I did post up here or www.bikeforums.net years ago but I can't seem to find it. I'm sure you can get the correct size with the BSF thread. Cheers, Michael

Thanks Guys!
The Death Fork Network comes through again. The information is all there in the "Measurements and Dimensions" thread: I should have looked there first.
Even better, it looks like there's a local supplier I can get these from: D Middleton & Son in Batley (https://stainlessmiddleton.co.uk/). I'll swing out that way on Friday and take the spindle with me to make sure I get the right size!

Problem solved! Nipped into Middleton & Son during my lunch break: unfortunately, they were taking theirs as well, so I had a short wait for Middleton and (presumably) Son to get back and reopen the store. - It is, in fact, a unit in a rather decrepit mill complex on the outskirts of Batley, but when the door was unbolted it revealed a treasure house with a distinct smell of mineral oil, a large collection of components and some metalworking benches and implements of various sources. Middleton (fils) - who is probably the driving force behind their web presence - passed me on to Middleton(pere) who very quickly ascertained that my spindle did indeed require a 5/16th BSF bolt, cleaned out the existing threads in the spindle with a handy little gizmo and provided me with bolts and washers for e very reasonable price. (Bolts £2.10 each).
If anyone else needs something similar, let me know!
