Glad to be part of this forum. Never even knew such a forum existed until I was browsing Viscount bicycles. I am a proud owner of one that my brother handed down to me when I was 14 years old in 1986. He bought it in the mid 70's. It was my first set of wheels that I rode everywhere, until I actually got a car in 1990. I've kept the bike hidden since 1990. Hardly ridden it since then. As far as I know, it's all original, with dreaded death fork still intact, though I've replaced the tires, handlebar tape, and had new crank bearing installed back in the mid 90's.

Welcome to the forum, glad you found us!
That sounds a bit like my story too, except without the brother and a few years earlier.
Shout up if you need any help posting up pictures. The forum itself is full, so we all need to put pictures on other sites (Flickr or such like ) and then link them from there to here, but they will show up on the forum.

If ever you fancy getting very specific on dating Shimano parts they all have a code hidden on them somewhere that gives the year. (it isn't literal though) Then somewhere on-line there is a list of the codes and corresponding years. (I'll put a link in here later)

Shimano date code is two letters, the first giving the year, with A=1976, and the second being the month (A=January). All letters are used, including I and O. After Z the years simply restart from A. Before 1976 the use of the code seems rather uncertain. It might have been used.

Yes, no surprise as they are always tucked away out of sight, it really is a tough job to find them but they are there on all Shimano components.
