Hi Richard
Your bike is a late 1977 or early '78 bike with an almost standard specification.
The RD, freewheel, mudguards, tyres, bar tape(!), seat stem, cyclo frame pump mounts and seat clip bolt are not original parts. But everything else is and what a collection it is!
You have one of the later CroMo BB spindles with half decent quality control and machined tapers so fitting cranks is no problem.
The frame number shows the that it is one made at the Bilston factory. I have seen those rear drop outs used on 1976 USA Aerospace Pros and Gran Sports.
All sorts of drop outs - including Milremo - were used on Aerospace front forks and frames. It was a case of use what you could get at the time. And such was the unpredictable nature of the parts supply industry that it was not easy keeping up with the frame makers...
The BB bearings are cheap to buy so I would always change them if you intend to ride the bike although don't throw away the old ones because they look to be the original ones supplied with the bike! You might want to keep them for a 'museum piece' find which may be just around the corner...
As long as the BB spindle has no cracks, shows no sign of lump hammer/cold chisel abuse and is straight then I would clean up/polish/refit. Those later BB spindles with a decent JIS taper are pretty good.
Watching your project develop over the winter is just what the doctor ordered! Look forward to seeing it develop.

Cheers buddy for the comments, I was thinking no-one cared! I have always wanted an aero so will do a good job on it Bought the 6003 2RS bearings £6.60 for the pair and bought a falcon (see post on other bikes for the crane) it is a 76er mint now cleaned Bike is with Universal Cycles again and Dave has the original decals We decided on Silver with blue seat post / head tube trim Now looking for a Lambert crank (good luck with that one I hear the hollers) Mudguards off, will try to get some suitable high flange hubs and tubs (I have some Normandies if you thing they would look ok) Advice on the Falcon would be appreciated, decals are original by the way and recon its around 76. Also bought some dura ace 7200 shifters, (leave the old ones on (Shimano) or swap?) as I have seen both on Pro's Polished the viscount saddle (with Brooks saddle soap type stuff) Thanks again

I've nothing against Normandies - great hubs in my book and they certainly look the part! Please bear in mind that a Viscount rear hub is spaced differently than other large flange hubs of the time. As for fitting other parts it's always tricky deciding how to play it. I've done all ends of the restoration spectrum from extreme fidelity to whatever I want. Whichever option you choose I am sure it will be great! Having said all that, the parts on your bike look great and as I said in my last post, nearly everything is original. I reckon a bit of mirror polishing here and there will transform them. No offence, but I think that Suntour rear mech. simply has to go! As for the Falcon, I reckon it is a 1978 'Olympic' model. Check these out: linklinkKeep up the good work! Cheers Steve

Nice score! It will look great with a new paint job. I'm with Steve in the whatever-works-is-great department, although we part ways over SunTour. Keep it.
Warm regards,
Frank

Thoughts please on the tub treads Ok, I have been bike bits shopping and bought - Rear Crane Mech - the Suntour sprint is in the spares
- SR Royal seat post like the campy record type with 2 hole adjuster - K Alloy one is near the bin
- Sunshine 5345 L/F hubs with fiamme tub rims but with Wolber Cross (file tread) tubs (are these frost riding tubs acceptable?)
- Rear Viscount QR skewer
The hubs are not as well made as others I've seen but I think will suffice Other bits have been cleaned and look great; even the saddle. Paint nearly done but don't know if I will get back before Christmas All the Best for Christmas Richard

Started the build today after an absolute pain with that BB / Spindle Look at first post for latest pictures of build Head shaker for the BB!!!
My advice for the BB / spindle is buy the 6003RS bearings and get measurements of the internal diameter, it may not be exactly 17mm; then get the spindle turned down to just a tight tap in diameter. When putting back together you will then not need to bash it back together. I have had to file it back square.
More building today.

The blue looks a good match to the frame highlights so I would go with that personally. If however it’s not a good match and pictures can deceive I would go black.

crank armI have this, if you're interested. Free, if you'll cover shipping and actually want it. Be forewarned - the square hole does NOT accept any crank spindle I have on hand. Not Campy, not Tange, especially not even an old Viscount straight-no-taper spindle. Nothing goes in. On the other hand - SR cranksetThese came off a Viscount I acquired last year. This time, the non-tapered spindle fits in too well. The crank arms are not at all snug when crank bolts are removed. They are actually loose on the spindle. It's an SR Royal, alloy arms with steel ring, and I likely have the inner ring and maybe some hardware around here somewhere. Again, free to anyone who will pay the postage. Best regards, Frank

Thanks Frank problem solved at last with emry cloth and a smidge of angle grinder to smooth off the deviations that were put into it (spindle ends) by the install at an earlier time SR cranks have gone on; and went for blue for the bar tape Happy now with the final build Blue ProRichard

That is a lovely outcome. The paint job looks fantastic and the scalloping at the headtube looks original.

Hey that's a nice Viscount! You have lots of interesting details in the thread. I figure that one of my rear dropouts could be a copy of the Milremo with the inset eyelets. Also the details about the spindle fitting/ and tapper damage are great info for my current project. I realy like how the leather came up on the saddle and I hope it is comfortable. And that Crane -wow it looks new !!
