Death Bottom Bracket!! In fact, a fault affecting only 1 in 5000 bikes and one rider injured. But 144,000 bikes (made between April 2014 and May 2017) are being recalled. It's being done by Brompton voluntarily. You'd have thought they could just put a pin through it or some Loctite and make it better ...

I may be one of the small number of Brompton riders who don't read The Guardian every day.

I love the BBC Exec's (and minion researcher ) riding into work on the TV program W1A on their fold up's and competing to have the lightest, and quickest to fold up.

I love the BBC Exec's (and minion researcher ) riding into work on the TV program W1A on their fold up's and competing to have the lightest, and quickest to fold up. I laughed a lot at this week's episode when Anna Rampton, BBC Head of Better, joins the boys and turns up on her new Brompton, but has to ask Ian Fletcher, BBC Head of Values, to fold it for her outside Broadcasting House. David Tennant's narration is brilliant - 'simple to fold if you listen to the instructions at the shop'. Definitely worth catching on BBC iPlayer. I have just spent this evening replacing the rear inner tube on mine after the rubber shroud on the valve stem split and leaked air, so there was no way to patch that. I ended up dismantling and cleaning the whole drive train and putting a new chain on. It changes gear much more smoothly now. At least it will look as though I look after it when I take it for my new bottom bracket, as mine is in the affected population of about 144,000 bikes.

I went to my LBS, Red Kite Cycles, this morning with my Brompton and they fitted a replacement bottom bracket in 40 minutes while I did a bit of local shopping, then admired the stock of Condors and their own range of Bullfinch Cycles. Reynolds 853 frames, fillet brazed by their former mechanic here in Solihull. They look very nice, but priced as you might expect for a bespoke builder.

I rode the BWC at Goodwood in 2013 & 2014, but have been unlucky in the Ballot every year since they moved it to London in 2015. I've applied again this year. Entries close on 5th Feb, so be quick. Good luck to all. 46-mile 'short' Ride London route on 29th July, anyone?
