Looks fab, and I think the weekend you have chosen suits most. Sadly, I can't join you. I am leading the 10th anniversary Five Miles to Fabulous ride on Saturday 10, so it is rather a special one. On Sunday 11 I am leading the Chiltern section of the V-CC to the 3 sections barbecue. There could be several Viscounts out for that event, at least two of the North London section have Viscounts. Yes, I have told them to get on board here!

We're booked into the Orchard Field for 10th & 11th. Now to find a tent... Great! Good to have you back Lewis. Maybe too late to mention this now, but somehow Stella managed to book both nights for a total of £20 because she is on bike/backpacker. That is a good deal.

Work commitments mean I will most likely be a day visitor this year, instead of camping, as I have for the past couple of DFR gatherings.
I'll wangle the extra time if I can.
Look forward to riding with you all again.

Just thought I would mention this....there is a station just 5 miles from our rally start point , called Colwell. It is on the main line fast service down the west of the country from Birmingham to the north , about 1 hour direct. And from the south east , Oxford 2 hrs and London, some direct trains 3 hrs.
Hope this helps.
Tip for those coming by train - Get your tickets booked pretty quick.

A quick look at the schedules indicates that Colwall is one stop (7 minutes) north of Ledbury on the Worcester to Hereford line. Ledbury station looks to be a bit closer to the campsite than Colwall. As Jem says, there are direct services to Colwall or Ledbury from Birmingham via Worcester, and from London Paddington departing at 17:22, 18:22 and 19:22 on Friday 9/6/17, via Reading & Oxford. Return journeys to London on Sunday may be more of an adventure! I'll have a car with a cycle rack if anyone would like to be collected for any reason (e.g. late arrival after dark). If anyone's planning to come from London Marylebone or Euston via Birmingham on Friday evening, I may be able to offer a lift down to Ledbury from Solihull or Birmingham International. PM me if interested.

Thanks for info Rob - The reason I mentioned Colwell was that I didn't think it was on the same line as Ledbury, and that it was more likely to have trains direct from Birmingham and London.
So, if a person got on a train from say London or Birmingham, they would just as easily be able to get off in Ledbury, as Colwell? If so, then my post isn't as helpful as I first thought. Thanks for clarification

Jem, yes, I think so. I did feel a spoilsport 'pouring water' on your fireworks! I'd never heard of Colwall, so I went straight to the National Rail enquiries app. I'm sure it's a very quaint station, but I can't see it offering any benefit over Ledbury.
Both stations are on 'The Cotswold Line', which runs from Oxford to Hereford via Evesham and Worcester.

No problem Rob - I knew that Cowell was on the line for Birmingham etc and therefore thought it would have been a better option...but I didn't know Ledbury was on the same line and hence, way easier.
I have something in this weekend, but realise that we could do with a get together to check out some routes etc...I'll drop you a line with available dates, but time is getting tight now, maybe we ought to ask around, or check on line for quiet 25 milers in that area , with a pub stop half way or more frequent?

I've created an approximate DFR5 route for Map my Ride users. I'm trying to find out how to distribute a Garmin-compatible version. Any suggestions welcome. There looks to be a bit of climbing up to Eastnor, but the views should be worth it. DFR5 draft route by RMT@261, on Flickr I'm currently trying to persuade Mrs RobT that she'd like to spend Bank Holiday Monday in the charming market town of Ledbury (with the freedom to shop wherever she wants to for a couple of hours)! Or there's the Cider Cycling Route that Sooper8 suggested originally: Ledbury Cider Cycling Route by RMT@261, on Flickr I'm going tomorrow (Monday) morning to have a ride around. I'll let you know how I get on. Enjoy the Bank Holiday!

We ignored the forecast of heavy rain showers this morning and took a trip to Ledbury. Orchard field by RMT@261, on Flickr I was sorry not to have used a Viscount but, if the weather had turned out as forecast, I wanted brakes, tyres and gears that I knew would work quickly and efficiently. (For anyone who's interested, the bike is my general workhorse, a yr.2000 model GT Force, with 4130 CroMo 'custom-butted' Triple Triangle frame, 24-speed Shimano RSX gears , currently shod with Continental Top Touring 2000 700c x 28mm tyres.) The draft DFR5 route I took roughly followed the National Byways Ledbury Loop, which I started in Ledbury town centre, then made my way towards the campsite, which is up a country lane that is very rural once you have ridden past the local landmark of the Heineken chemical plant cider press. The roads from the campsite out of Ledbury follow the contours of the rolling countryside, with a few short & cheeky climbs and matching descents. As you pass between the villages, the route follows some very quiet country lanes that show signs of the local agricultural economy, i.e. they can be overgrown at the sides and have a muddy strip along the centre. The loop on the map between miles 5 and 8 through Dymock aren't part of the signposted Ledbury Loop, and don't enhance the ride much, so I suggest we short-circuit that bit, save ourselves a couple of miles and straighten out the SW corner of the ride. The following 10 miles runs along pleasant country roads via Pendock and Bromsberrow. After Bromsberrow, the route I took goes up to Eastnor via a long but not very steep hill before a quick drop back down into Ledbury. If some riders are concerned that their knees might be feeling the strain after about 18 miles, there may be a 'direct' route (A417?) from Bromsberrow to Ledbury that avoids the climb up to Eastnor. I didn't spot very many pubs in the villages along the way. The buildings that looked as though they might have been pubs appear to have been turned into private houses. There are, however, plenty of watering holes in Ledbury itself, though we do need to cross a quite busy A road from the town centre back to the campsite. Thanks to Anne (Mrs RobT) for coming with me, and to our friends Anne & Charles for keeping her company while I rode the route. I made it back to Ledbury just before the heavens opened. Updated route pictured below, with food station mark at the Feathers Inn on Ledbury High Street. I can recommend their fish finger sandwich. Screen Shot 2017-05-30 at 09.53.35 by RMT@261, on Flickr Only 12 days to go, so get some lube on those chains and check your headsets, brake blocks and cable clamp nuts!

I have permission from the domestic authority to attend, but only for the day. I wonder if anyone will be hanging around camp while the cyclists are charging uphill and down dale? Just in case I could persuade Mrs & Master C to come with me - unfortunately I think they would be too out of practice to join the ride - or rather Master C would be & I doubt we could leave him alone for several hours without a PS4 ...

None taken!!! I must say that,as we're going from Ledbury, it would be cider in the bottle,if my bike had bottle holders fitted. I agree,I'm not over the hill yet,I hope it's not in sight yet. I can always get off and hobble up any I can't manage. Looking forward to seeing you all. Is Lewis bringing any cider with him? Cheers, Pete.

Looking forward to a cider...Stoatie, how's it going? Do you think you'll make it up for the ride?
EDIT - just wondering what bike to bring along....

Up the hill, that was what I wanted to say lol I was still half asleep and getting ready to leave the house. Pete: you're far from over the hill and and cider or ale in a bottle won't change that. hahahaha

I couldn't find a pub within easy walking distance of our DFR5 campsite, but...
A work colleague of mine runs a microbrewery as a hobby (or retirement plan) and supplies good quality beer to pubs and restaurants near to where he lives. He has a brew on at the moment that he's planning to package at the weekend. He's offered to fill a 10litre keg for me to bring to DFR5.
Would anyone object if I brought FREE BEER for DFR5?
Are we going to make a communal supper on Saturday evening, as we did last year with the Chicken Fajitas? If so, we might need to confirm with Ray & Leslie if they are bringing their gas stove. Any menu preferences welcome, so long as they don't involve more than two pans for us all!
Getting quite excited now...

I was busy last night but noticed I'd got a missed call and message from a Ledbury number - forgot about it till lunch time today. Picked up the answer message from previous evening saying "what time are you arriving tonight?" OOOooops
Anyway, after much apologising on my part (and checking my confirmation email to see that I was indeed stupid and had booked the wrong weekend), they told me they might not have space next weekend in that field as there were quite a few bookings!
To cut a long story short, they called back and did get me in on the same plot as everyone else. Phew...that would have been embarrassing if I could direct others to booking the camp site but failed to do so myself.
Free beer eh Rob? Well, go on then, you've twisted my arm!
We have a single portable burner and then the rings in the van. Probably something like spag bol or chilli? Any veggies amongst us?

John, The Tariff listing on the Woodside Lodge website indicates: Additional Persons Child under 16 years – £1 each per night Adults 16 years + £2 each per night Extra vehicle – £2 per night There doesn't appear to be a daytime only rate quoted, but, at worst, £8 for a car and three adults. (Jem, based on your recent exchanges, should we let them know of John's planned arrival on Saturday?) Orchard Field is reached by turning right off Falcon Lane if you are coming from the Leadon Way roundabout, about 1 mile up the road after passing the Heineken Cider press on your left. map1 by RMT@261, on Flickr
