'Bimble'...now there's a word I've not heard much since 1978. How can you be so precise about 1978? Mostly the 70s are just a blur ... I was a mere 13 years old at the time..spending many hours in the local Social Club bar playing pool, and listening to the juke box...a number of the young blokes, many of whom were bikers (who were considered a bit 'brash' by the older chaps), used the word 'bimble' quite a lot - and after 1978 I was out in the 'punk world' and it was considered a word used by another sub-culture and as such we selectivly edited it out of our vocabulary. As an aside -The community of men who'd come back from WW2 just built the breeze block and corrugated-iron ranch style Social Club that I talk of above - and who was going to stop them? By 1978 the ceiling was treacle black with tar and the place looked pretty much the same as it did when they built it. It was a proper little sanctuary! Dominoes, crib and social club train trips to the seaside once a year - with the guard's van being used as a bar with a few barrels in there! My uncle was a brewery worker and used to change the barrels, look after the cellar etc, in the days when it beer was out of the barrel and lager was at best a bad joke. Many times I remember the ale spurting all over me as the wooden keg pegs split or forced out. Great fun! So, that's why I'm pretty sure it was circa September 1978 the last time I heard it used....although I am sure a few stay utterances of it did make it into my sphere of hearing after that, but just not with any real feeling. I'll dig a picture of the social club out later tonight...

Great stuff there Jem.I'm not even thinking of appologising for the use of a very descriptive word. When I get one of my '50's bikes on the road,it may test a few memory cells. You know you can rely on me for a bit of topic spread! Cheers, Pete.

It's not that hard to catch up on, Pete. Hey the Grateful Dead were on tour this year. Did you catch a concert, man? It was like, wow, man. (For the record, no I did not manage to catch a Dead concert) Someone once told me, or maybe I read - "If you can actually remember the seventies, you weren't there."
Blurry, John, mostly blurry.
