If you can set a date, I'll see whether I can get Peter Britton and Mick Ives to come out. Peter was the Export Manager, has recently had a 90 year old (!) heart valve replaced and a pacemaker fitted to match Mick's. Peter (who lives near Warwick) is now off driving, but as the book is making progress, we'd like to come and collect advance orders

Oh yes. Solitary virtual rides are fine, but it will be good to meet up with the fellow enthusiasts again.

Sounds great, but it might be a good idea to wait for a few more responses before setting a date!

That would seem OK for me. I might not be able to ride my Viscount though. Cheers, Pete.

As far as I know, 6 August will be OK for me.
The next big question is "where?"

Back end of July better for me, unless the venue is East Lothian. 6 August clashes with Fringe by the Sea.

Whatever is decided I’ll do my best to attend. Been a tough time with an ongoing knee injury (hence my lack of activity on here) but I still get out on short rides. I hope everyone is good and well

I hope everyone is good and well Hi Franco. Good to hear from you. Best of luck with the knee. I’m running behind in health recovery and projects but I have high(er) hopes for the season. As to riding, “some” is always better than “none”! Best, John “wheelson”

We have missed you Franco. It seems many of us are falling apart. If only we were as easy to work on as old bikes.

Thank you John and Brian.
Without wanting to derail the thread yes Brian, it’s a pity I can’t put some GT85 or Marine Grease into my knee haha. Apparently there is a two year wait at hospitals for minor health issues here in the U.K. I’m into the second year since the x-ray so will hopefully hear something soon.

Hi. It's gone quiet on this thread for the past month. I have kept the date clear but I'm afraid it requires someone else to organise if it is in the midlands, which is generally considered the most convenient area. I'm not sure if there is anyone from the southern (England) contingent on this forum, but there was some talk about a possible spin out south on a Viscount Facebook page, in the New Forest. Would that be a possible for people further north than me (I'm in London)? The motorway connections are pretty good.
BTW, phew! What a scorcher! 37 or 38 in London I think today. Forecast is that it might reach 40 (104 F) tomorrow, but probably further north.

I meant to post up to say , and your post reminded me. This weather reminds me a little of the DFR1 ..melting tarmac etc We were at 38degrees today and forecast for even hotter tomorrow. I think the climate change skeptics might just have melted away too?

I'm sorry that family commitments prevented me from riding (or offering to organise) a DFR last Saturday, 6th August. Anne and I did head out on a warm Sunday 7th to see the Commonwealth Games Road Races as they passed through Hatton, just west of Warwick. IMG_5026 by RMT@261, on Flickr Here is the eventual winner of the men's race, Aaron Gate of New Zealand, passing our corner at the junction of the A4177 and Ugly Bridge Road: IMG_5064 by RMT@261, on Flickr At the time, he was being closely followed by 2018 TdF winner Geraint Thomas, riding for Wales (Cymru), who finished in a valiant eighth place. IMG_5069 by RMT@261, on Flickr For those who have the time, patience and interest, here is a video showing the 4m20s build up to, and the 15-second passing of, the women's peloton earlier in the day. Both the men's and women's pelotons passed at about 20-minute intervals as they undertook laps of the 10-mile (16km) course, 7 laps for the women and 10 for the men. IMG_0032 by RMT@261, on Flickr We stopped for a bite to eat at Hatton Locks Cafe, which provides useful bike racks. IMG_0033 by RMT@261, on Flickr I'm not sure if we've ever run a caption competition here, but the clouds above my head in this picture seem to be inviting words to reflect my thoughts at the time! All suggestions welcome. IMG_5035 by RMT@261, on Flickr

Some nice pics there Rob.
Quite amazing that Geriant Thomas got back on his bike after the fall in the time trial event, and pretty much only lost by that amount of time he was down on the floor.

Rob, those are indeed very nice bikes and it sounds like a super great outing. I had some plans for a modified DFR 22 which sadly fell apart. The plan was to take a Viscount on vacation to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, ride down to the ferry to Ocracoke Island, and visit the British Cemetery to pay homage to those WW ll seamen buried there. Unfortunately, Covid reared it’s ugly self early in the week and due to my total lack of energy, it was not to be. Best, John “wheelson”

Hi Wheelson, I had to Google Ocracoke Island and the British Ceremony. It is very poignant and good to know that those seamen are not forgotten.
Sorry that Covid took you out. I succumbed a couple of months ago after finally “relaxing” once the all-clear sounded. More fool me!
Cheers Chris

Hi Rob,
What a great couple of bikes!
I’m a total newb when it comes to Viscount bikes but I would really love to know which full mudguards you have on the bike on the left? I currently have “shorties” on mine but this lovely weather (in the UK) isn’t going to last forever.
I notice the bike on the right has suicide brakes just like mine. Do you use any particular brake pads to make them any more effective?
Sorry to bombard you with questions but I do have an entry for the caption competition.
I was thinking something like:
”(Smiling through gritted teeth) Yes, I know we’ve locked them up but I’m not letting these bikes out of my sight for a second!”
Please let me know if I’m a winner. I accept cheques, postal orders, and even cash (subject to the necessary security clearance of course).
Cheers Chris

Hi Rob, What a great couple of bikes! I’m a total newb when it comes to Viscount bikes but I would really love to know which full mudguards you have on the bike on the left? I currently have “shorties” on mine but this lovely weather (in the UK) isn’t going to last forever. With regard to mudguards / fenders, I agree that 'shorties' are purely decorative in nature, except they might delay the build-up of crud around the brakes. When I bought my first Viscount, new, in 1980 or '81 I had mudguards fitted and they were of this type. These are ESGE ones and are both durable and I think attractive, fitting with most colour bikes. Searching on ESGE, all the hits appear to be for used ones, so perhaps they aren't made any more. However, there are modern equivalents to be had (and probably cheaper). I think they are usually called 'chromo plastic' (?) For period correctness, any vintage Bluemels 'guards would be fine and they do come in a variety of colours (not just black) and designs. They do have a tendency to become a bit fragile and the super-light ones seem to crumble as you look at them. It looks as though they are still being made as SKS Bluemels and the SKS brand itself is worth looking out for. Hope this helps. Perhaps other forum members have ideas as well?

I like the Bluemels and if you can find them , a good range of colours - I particularly like their logo/font. Last time I searched they were quite expensive though.
They are 'correct' for a Viscount in that they were on the Aerospace 'AllRounder' model, so if they are good enough for Viscount then , they are good enough now.
I also have the ESGE on my Viscount Deore tourer, and like the design on them and the integrated reflector.

Thank you cusqueno and jem.
That's very helpful. I will check out the ESGE guards. I have also heard of Bluemels.
I'm actually kicking myself as I saw a pair of Bluemels taken off a vintage bike going for free on the local Trash Nothing group but I was too late in replying and they had already been promised to someone else.
Cheers Chris
