Four interesting solutions to riding on frozen lakes (there are others). Not a concern where I live, but interesting. I think I would steer clear of the saw blade bike.

The Instructables site has several ideas for DIY ice / snow tyres/tires for bikes. I like the look of this one, but haven't tried it. It claims to be suitable for lower profile tyres, not just chunky MTB ones: www.instructables.com/Pop-Rivet-Ice-Tires-for-Your-Road-Bike/Incidentally, there have been a couple of reports on a London Cycling Face Book page recently of cyclists skidding on invisible ice on the roads; and my daughter told me that this morning her bike skidded out from under her. Fortunately as she was braking to a stop she was easily able to stand up without falling over. This was on one of London's allocated bike lanes - a 'Cycle Super Highway'. They have a blue surface, different from the rest of the road - perhaps that could be a factor in making the road slippy?
