Hi all,
We unfortunately can't make the weekend as I am (unusually) working both days. We have got a couple of days in Derbyshire booked for mid-week after, taking in the High Peak, Tissington and Monsal trails. It will be a chance to bring Mrs LHJ's AX18 mileage up to 1000 since we bought her just on a year ago. I'll try and get some photos to share. I'm still looking for a Viscount of my own - Mrs LHJ is very attached to hers and I'm very rarely allowed a ride. For all who take part, enjoy another virtual DFR.

Hi Rob,
I'm short in the leg, so 21 1/2" is ideal. It's not that the bikes aren't out there, they're just a long way from South West Wales,
Thanks, Jim

Jim Unfortunately, due to medical issues, returning from vacation, working at the shop, and life in general, the pseudo-Supa will NOT be ready by the 11th. Top that off with Mrs W’s knee injury so her contribution is doubtful as well. However, weather permitting, the blue (?) Viscount from last year is ready and willing so I guess it’s “second verse same as the first”. Good news is that post surgery in August or September I should have plenty of time to finish up all those projects before the next DFR. And since the advertised weight of Viscount is around 25lbs, no lift restrictions! Best, John “wheelson”

I may look at going here on the 11th....apologies probably not on a Viscount/Lambert though. www.visitbelvoir.co.uk/event/belvoir-retro-ride-ii/Belvoir Retro Ride II 11/07/2021 10:00 - 14:00 www.facebook.com/events/632773168117674The 2nd installment of the Belvoir Retro Ride. The ride will start and finish at The Clawson Kitchen in Long Clawson LE14. Route details to follow. Car parking will be available at Long Clawson Village hall which is just around the corner. Ride Notes Firstly, it is NOT a race, no medals or podiums. Whilst helmets are not obligatory it is recommended. Its not a mass start, so there will be no waving of a start flag. Feel free to get underway after 10am. The ride will not be marshalled or sign posted. Please look at the links above for the route. Please ride in small groups as the roads are narrow. Some areas of the route have poor road surface, so take care and point out any issues to fellow riders. Please look out for one another and if you see a fellow rider who has stopped then please offer to help even if they are a stranger. You MUST enjoy yourself!! You do not have to have a Retro bike to do the ride, however it is encouraged. Neo Retro bikes are welcome, a combo of old and new. Anything pre 2000 will be considered Retro. Post Ride Notes I hope that we get a wide range of bikes, not just expensive road bikes. The plan afterwards is to get some refreshments have a chat and nosey at the machines present. Please adhere to the latest Covid rules, observe social distancing at the Cafe.

Sounds great, sooper8. I have tried to find something like this around here without much success. There are occasional "L'eroica" rides and some less common tweed rides but not much aimed specifically at retro bikes, especially inexpensive ones.
BTW, why not a Viscount?

I might be rained out on Sunday. I have been in New Hampshire for 8 days, 6-1/2 of which have been rainy. Currently raining hard. We were planning to switch from my daughter's lake house to tent camping in the mountains next week but the forecast is more rain, so I think we will head home and try again later in July or August. Maybe I can get in a consolation ride later next week. I hope everyone else who is riding has a great day on Sunday.

50% chance of rain here in Western Pennsylvania USA on Sunday. I may cheat a bit and take the blue ? Viscount out tomorrow. Same bike, same location so photos may be confusing and boring. I did change the saddle from leather “holey” Viscount to prostate-friendlier Terry/TFI. I hope this weekend is rideable for all of you. Best, John “wheelson”

I’m going out either way.

Viscount, just a neighborhood ride. It was one of those “why do I own another bike?” episodes. So smooth, quiet, and flawless! I guess this was my DFR Prologue. The Terry/TFI saddle worked well with only minor tweaking. DFR Stage 1 tomorrow if everything wheelson is in proper working order! Best, John “wheelson”

I just took advantage of great Saturday’s weather and did a great 20 miler on the local rail trail plus. I can’t get over how really sweet the blue ? Viscount rides and today was no disappointment. That route is a bit industrial but bits of pavement and gravel, woods, bike lane blacktop, one climbing switchback, and a short tunnel. Best of all, only a few blocks from my home and usable for commuting to my bike shop gig. Depending on the weather tomorrow, today’s ride may morph into my DFR. Some photos when I get them uploaded to Flickr. Best, a smiling John “wheelson”

I’ve also taken the opportunity of great weather to get out today. On the lime green ax400. 26 miles & very hot. Reminded me of dfr1 a little bit , except 20 less people. Didn’t take any pics today- apologies. Have a great day tomorrow all of you who are out. Stay safe.

Today it was not raining here in New Hampshire for the first time in a week so I took the opportunity to do my DFR ride early. I did the same route I posted here last month, 27 miles round trip along the Mad River from Campton to Waterville Valley and back, 1800 feet up and 1800 feet down. This time I used the 1976 Viscount Gran Sports, which worked flawlessly. Here is a copy of the link to the original ride map and photos (Viscount Sebring). I took one additional picture today (below), prompted by Jim's elk photo.

Gloves coz it was cold! Actually had two merino base layers under a woollen jersey and a windproof gillet. And I had merino inner gloves inside these ones, and a merino beanie over my cycling cap under my helmet!
You can just see where I squeezed in a pair of Kool Stop salmon brake pads into the original square Dura Ace brake block holders. A bit oversized but the stopping power is finally what it should be.
But it was a speccy day in Melbourne
On the Ring Road trail, a very industrial section of bike path in Melbourne's northern suburbs. Had the bag because I needed to carry my 36cm BB spanner in case it came loose again. It didn't.
Note "Supa Ride" patch, courtesy many years ago of Busaste. Thanks mate!
Half way around what was prob a 40km loop. Standing near Bolte Bridge in the docklands area. Didn't stop at the pub on the way, sorry! But my mate and I did have a coffee and pastries in town before the ride home. The bike performed flawlessly. Hope your DFR was as refreshing as mine.

I was up with the lark this morning (or should that be 'at sparrows fart', Sprockit?), freshened by the thought of a DFR, albeit virtual. I set off at 7am on the Sebring for a tour of my favourite local country roads and sites, as detailed here for those with access to Strava, or as traced below. Screen Shot 2021-07-11 at 10.22.35 by RMT@261, on Flickr My home village of Dorridge is part of Solihull borough, in the West Midlands of England, about 10 miles SE of Central Birmingham, 12 miles NW of Warwick and 15 miles North of Stratford upon Avon. The canal network that surrounds Birmingham (' The Venice of the North' #9/15) is a legacy of the city's former might as a centre of manufacturing (see 'Peaky Blinders' for a historic documentary on Birmingham's proud heritage). I'm lucky to be able to access the Stratford upon Avon Canal about 2 miles from my home, which can make for a reasonably flat, if sometimes bumpy, cycle route. After a quick warm-up on some local roads, I headed to the canal at Hockley Heath, which is also the home of our local Rolls-Royce and McLaren car showroom: Untitled by RMT@261, on Flickr I'm sure there is some comment I could make about the Sebring reflecting the fine British craftsmanship on display behind the glass, but I'd be kidding myself really! Rollin’ by RMT@261, on Flickr Once onto the canal, the infrastructure and transport took on a mechanical style more familiar to Viscount owners: Rollin’ by RMT@261, on Flickr I followed the canal down from Hockley Heath, enjoying the rural charm Rollin’ by RMT@261, on Flickr via the flight of locks at Lapworth Rollin’ by RMT@261, on Flickr until I reached Kingswood Junction, where the SuA canal meets the Grand Union canal, which runs between Birmingham and London. Rollin’ by RMT@261, on Flickr From here, I left the canal towpaths and headed home via our local National Trust property, Packwood House Rollin’ by RMT@261, on Flickr and returned after 25 miles to home, where preparations are underway for tonight's Magnificent Victory/Humiliating Defeat (delete as appropriate) in the European Football (Soccer) Championship Final. Rollin’ by RMT@261, on Flickr Looking forward to reading of everyone else's adventures, and hope that we find some way of getting together next year. (Bendo - great to see your ride report and pictures. Congratulations to Australia on their Ladies' Wimbledon Tennis Champion, Ashleigh Barty!)

Thanks Rob, Barty's a true champion. So great to finally see an Aussie tennis player who can handle pressure!
Great ride pics and beautiful bike of yours. McLarens and barges in Land Rover country. Couldn't get more English! Good luck for the final tonight. b

Some great pictures there! I had a cunning plan to ride at 3pm because by then I expected the roads to be quiet once everyone was stocked up for the England match tonight. It all went to plan, the roads were as quiet as they were during lockdown. The route wasn’t the one I wanted to do but I’m still carrying a knee injury and don’t want to cause more damage. Just a steady 12 miles. A really enjoyable ride that turned more into a Death Fork Ramble than a Rally. Forgotten how nice the Aerospace Pro is and I felt like carrying on and on. This is debatable point but many say this is the highest point in my county (Nottinghamshire). Two separate rides on different bikes for me today.
First a ten miler on the 5-speed Sport. Not much in the way of climbing in the Pennine hills, just to a neighbouring town for a lateral flow test.
Second on the Sprint - a jaunt around the local hilltop roads with a couple of good, stiff climbs thrown in. Seventeen miles, so twenty seven for the day, which is about the usual distance for a DFR ride.
No sparrowfart ride today, Rob!
Perhaps a bit of shaky video to post by next weekend.

Got home from NH and had a couple hours of rain-free weather so I went out and did the Upper Charles River Trail through Holliston, Massachusetts and Milford Massachusetts for a nice 28.4 mile out and back ride on official DFR day. It was a familiar ride and a good one for the Viscount Sebring.

Well done everyone who has ridden some form of DFR. I have family complications - ageing parents now, for those who remember my coming to DFRs for some offspring respite, pleased to say she has turned out alright if still somewhat umm determined - sorry, I digress, I’ll fit in a ride as and when.

My plans for this weekend were flattened as a result of an adverse reaction to a course of medication that I'm on. This left me lying around shivering and intermittently dosing myself with Paracetamol.
Fortunately these episodes are short-lived and don't occur very often, so I'm postponing my DFR excursion until next weekend.
I can only hope that watching the Tour de France on TV doesn't inspire me to an insane attempt on unattainable verticality.

I also am suffering from medical issues,in my case I'm waiting for open heart surgery to replace a well dodgy valve and an artery graft to replace the stent that was fitted 3.5 years ago. I'm hoping that it will happen sooner rather than later, but, who knows. Cheers, Pete.

Sobering thought, Brian. In my post-high school teen years I had very little interest in riding bikes even though I was working full time in a bike shop! My riding interest came alive in my second bike shop stint, post-teen and post U.S. Army. Best, John “wheelson”

I'm hoping that it will happen sooner rather than later, but, who knows. Cheers, Pete. Alas, another well worn heart; don't worry, stay on top of it and it will last a long time. My heart boosts 13 stents, a triple bypass and most recently a Coronary Brachytherapy treatment. While riding in the 2016 Tehachapi Granfondo I dropped with complete heart failure (no pulse, no heartbeat). I lay dead in the road for many minutes; long enough for my blood to pool leaving large areas of discoloration. I eventually was revived by an ambulance crew. At the heart hospital, they called me the miracle man as my survival was considered near impossible and my lack of brain damage a true miracle. That said, there is a bright side to such maladies. My wife and I are caring for her 92 year old father. He suffers terribly from what I call the living too long disease; a pitiful state where you barely function and are just waiting for the comfort of death. We with heart problems, have an excellent chance of avoiding that fate; in a strange way I find that comforting. So long as your heart beats, ride your bike and be happy say I.
This brings up another point. There really should be a service that sells our bike collections and parts for our survivors.
Cheerful aren't I Jim

Absolutely loved reading all the write ups of the rides from 3 continents this year. Great photos, inspiring. I wish I'd taken some photos myself, and as for the write up , it's such a well worn route for me I could have just posted a previous years gps app data.
