Browsing through eBay I just found this retro style front lamp Haven't tried it and it might be rubbish, but at the price (GBP3.71) it must be worth a try. Of course it comes (p&P included!) from Hong Kong. So it will probably take ages to arrive and might not look anything like the (rather good) photos. Anyway, more attractive in appearance than modern lights for vintage bikes. I'll let you know what it's like when mine arrives. ADDED: Also this one, in black for £4.00. This one is posted from London, apparently. Others are available from other sellers.

As luck would have it, browsing a charity shop today I found two of these lights and bought them for £1 each. The picture shows them quite well. They take 2 AA batteries each and appear to be quite well made, the body of course being electro-chromed plastic. A design fault might be that there is no rubber seal around the where the front part / lamp joins the body and the point where the fixing bracket enters the housing isn't sealed. So use in rain is likely to result in water leaking in. Silicon grease on assembly might help and (what I do on most bike lights anyway) wrapping Sellotape (not sure of the US translation of that) round the join. Light is reasonable - flashing or not - for 'being seen'. Unfortunately, both are missing any mounting bracket other than what is shown. file-2 by ShouldbeCusquenobutF**krwontletmeintomyproperaccou, on Flickr Image-22 by ShouldbeCusquenobutF**krwontletmeintomyproperaccou, on Flickr

That was a happy coincidence. I think I'd looked at these a couple of years back (maybe even posted up on here ?). I did think at that price it might have been worth adapting them to for a better/brighter LED bulb, so throwing the innards away and fixing a smaller more powerful light in its place EDIT- here's the thread I was thinking of viscountandlambert.boards.net/thread/503/adapting-vintage-lamp
