Hi Timbo - welcome to the forum. Wouldn't it be really easy if Viscount and put some kind of code in the frame number?! But, no such luck... It might also be worth by finding the codes on component parts (such as your Shimano) and date it that way, but if you haven't had it from new, then they might be later additions. Plus Viscount had well documented parts shortages and put whatever parts on a bike to get it out the factory door - so there can be big variations in components and that can confuse ID's. Shimano date codes by Sooper 8, on Flickr I think your guess of '83 is very close, possibly a year earlier? There is a great wealth of photos/info on here and I am pretty sure you will be able to match it up and discover the model and year. There is also a great Flick group here www.flickr.com/groups/1119963@N21/pool/and that might help. The frame itself has similarities with this one... IMG_2569 by Sooper 8, on Flickr IMG_2551 by Sooper 8, on Flickr but I am not sure they did this one is blue. Or this one 2013-06-14 10.35.04 1 by Sooper 8, on Flickr but that also wasn't released in that colour. Or it could be a Corsair Wayyfarer...? The embossed 'Viscount' on the rear stays, the lugs, and brazed-on cable clips on top bar are the key to identifying it Do you think it could possibly be re-sprayed? I'd search on here and the Flickr group and I'm sure you'll get there.

There were a couple of Viscount models that claimed to be available (possibly as an option) in Columbus tubing: page_2 by Cusqueno, on Flickr From 1981 and DA-AX by Cusqueno, on Flickr From 1982. Specification: DA-AX-data by Cusqueno, on Flickr I have never seen Campy drop outs on a Viscount before - they generally used SunTour ones in the 1980s, at least in the higher end models. This suggests a premium model, but the level of equipment now on the bike doesn't. However, the bottom cup on the headset might be an alloy Dura Ace one; although the top is steel Tange. So a bit puzzling. Like others have said, Viscount often had supply problems and built bikes with fairly random collections of components. Perhaps yours happened to be a high-spec frame built up with medium level components?

Thanks for your replies, after fully stripping the frame I can see no evidence of it being resprayed in the past. But careful inspection shows ‘witness’ markings where the original transfers were fitted ( the remains of a Columbus sticker on the seat tube is still there). I wonder if this frame was supplied ready painted from Columbus? I’ll continue to investigate by using this great forum.
