The routes for next year's UCI World Road Race Championships were released yesterday evening, and they are in my back yard (Harrogate). worlds.yorkshire.com/map/#/
Quite a bit of these routes will be familiar to a lot of the competitors as they have previously been raced over in the Tour de France and the subsequent Tours de Yorkshire (and I've ridden over quite a few of these roads myself - although at a somewhat more sedate pace). I'm looking forward to what should be a cracking festival of bike racing, next year.
Now, who's up for a preview? I've suggested Harrogate and the surrounding area as a venue for the Death Fork Rally before, but it seems to me that summer 2019 would be a great opportunity to ride over some of the WC parcours (Death Fork Race anybody??). North Yorkshire abounds in campsites and hospitable inns, and even the relatively flat bits are still pretty scenic. - You know it makes sense!

If I’m around the UK then I’m in for a DF Race, the Lambert is basically finished, just a rear wheel to build and it’s good to go..........!https://flic.kr/p/HSVntf

If you even whisper the word 'race', then you know Whippet will be there in a shot.

I’ll be happy to lend a hand with organising/route planning if people are up for this. I went to school in Otley, the town that two of the routes pass through. My brother still lives nearby. Recent experience suggests that agreement on a date is the first challenge.

Hills!!! I hate hills. Cheers, Pete. I’m working with Robert J to get the tandem into even better shape than it was for this year’s DFR if that would make the hills any easier for you, Pete (I hope your bruise has gone now!). Picking up the recent theme of trusted component suppliers, I can recommend Alex Warwick cycles very highly to anyone looking for a reliable and diligent spoke supplier. Alex cut and rolled 18 2.3mm plain Sapim spokes for the drive side of the tandem’s rear wheel while I waited at his house in the week before DFR6. I ordered the other half set of spokes, with nipples and washers to match, via the website last month. They arrived in the post on the next working day and were a pleasure to fit and work with.

I think an engine would be more appropriate for the hills around there! Bruising is well gone, thanks for asking. Cheers, Pete.

Given that I'm more of an over-the-hill climber than a hill-climber, I think you'll find that I can identify some flattish bits!

Vale of York is pretty flat, so there should be no problem finding flat routes - it's just the bits at the sides that get a bit steep!
A northern version of DFR has been suggested before, but various members were concerned about hills in Yorkshire. There are hills aplenty in Yorkshire if you enjoy climbing, but the area around York is brilliant cycling country - so much so that I had a recent 65 mile ride to the south of the city and never even changed out of 3rd gear!

Yeah, I often cycle over to York and around the villages (and their pubs) in the vicinity. There's a very pretty village on the way, with a duck pond and village green, called Askham Richard (well, pretty apart from the Young Offenders' Institution, there!) that has a lane that must have been specially named for users of the Brooks Vitesse saddle: "Buttacre Lane".

. . . Brooks Vitesse saddle? I have one on the Sport - it's like sitting on a piece of stair bannister! I usually treat the Sport as a type of 'cafe racer', to use a motorcycling expression, because of the saddle. I swapped it for a B17 whilst on my ride around York.

I put a Brooks B17 on my Carlton GP yesterday, finally gave up with the original Selle that was on the bike and what a transformation, it’s like getting home and sitting in your favourite armchair! That said I did have it set a little nose down and too far forwards so adjusted when home and will just have to try it again today, well it’s a good excuse for a ride isn’t it? Will carry a spanner today, am getting a little OCD with saddle position these days, it’s about as close to Mr Merckx I will get mind 😂

Yes I think that a Brooks Vitesse probably quite accurately reproduces the experience that Pete had with his tandem saddle malfunction at the DFR this year!
I do actually HAVE a Brooks Vitesse - it was on the Viscount Corsair Wayfarer I acquired, and that introduced me to this forum - but the first thing I did was to swap it for a B17, when the bike had its makeover.
I've always had a ..um.. soft spot for the Brooks B17. The first bike I bought with my own money was a 5-speed Carlton Continental that came with a B17 as standard. I paid 60 quid for that bike, and after about 10 years I sold it on for £20 when I upgraded to a 10-speed 531 tourer. If I'd known that 40 years on £60 would be less than the price of a new B17, I'd have kept the saddle when I sold the bike.

I’m out in Italy for a couple of weeks and have been ridding every day, swapping the bikes around as we do. My favourite for just a light spin at the moment is a Carlton Grand Prix which still has its original saddle, a Selle Vinyl Quilt Effect that is as uncomfortable as they come. Swapped over to a B17 and it has just transformed the ride, it feels like my old leather armchair at home......! Had many saddles but just always come back to Brooks, currently have 4 including a lovely Oval Badged B17 that I bagged at a recent Jumble looking quite sorry for itself but is coming up very well. If looked after they last an eternity! flic.kr/p/2aRxR2jwww.flickr.com/gp/159836983@N02/1M4271
