Wow!!! That is a stunner. Great work. A good Koga-Miyata is the only thing that would make me thin out my Viscount to make room in the shed. I used to have one (a Road Winner) but it was a touch too small. (if I can find a pic I'll post up) Did the hunt for suitable bits take long? EDIT - here it is IMG_2566 by Sooper 8, on Flickr

Always nice to see a minty fresh 40 year old bike that's back to it's former glory. Well done Richard!

I LIKE IT! Koga-Miyata (unlike Miyata) is a rare bird here in the states.
Great Job Jim

Hi, Great stuff ! I have the same bike. So your project rings bells with me. I noticed the wheels are not original which was the same for me.
I started with some HF viscount hubs left over from my '76 Sport and about 5 yrs ago i collected all the Arabesque parts, and a frame the same as this one. My heart was however set on that koga orange, so i striped it an tried several paint mixes to immitate it. All the alloy parts except rims, brakes, peddals and chainrings, got fine sanded and polished. I even made up some bolts and custom parts. To my delight i picked up the brake levers with original shimano hoods in near new condition (they get Armor oil every few months, and no direct sun to maintain their youth). I'll set up a link to photos I took.
And now with my current viscount project, i consider to swap out the hubs but the HF shimano ones are just a bit too common and not as nice.
Back then i chose the koga miyata frame because of it's geometry and standard fitting for brakes and threading. Recessed brake bolts, Also the lugs (not ornate but fine) and fluted seat stay tops, nice forks too. Also it is great to ride and lightweight. The choice of Arabesque was clear too.

Lovely lustre orange colour With the bottom bracket with holes in, your frame might be the upgraded Pro Racer? Nice bike Richard

Hi Richard, Yes the orange is nice, though darker than what I wanted as the black decals don't stand out so strongly. Well I checked through my frame details and the Koga broschures and found that my bike matches well to the 1980's model Gentsracer-S. The original colour looks different to the picture, but very similar to yours. So apparently the changes for the '80 model included: Champion tubing for main frame, holes in BB shell, a chain hanger, same long shaped and labeled rear dropouts, but mine had the eyelet chopped off before plating. Recessed brake bolt holes. Your frame number starts with G & mine with H, for '79 & '80 according to a frame code sheet I found. The Pro Racers and Full Pros look to be mostly blue, and nicer lug shapes. Cheers Steve
