FYI-for those of you looking for a new "high" go on ebay and click on "campagnolo gold" [not acupulco gold]..lots of tasty bits from all over the world to dress up your bike or for a restoration. i like the cable clamps, toe clips, quik release axles, downtube shifters-too much to wish for?!...

I recently saw a C-Record crank set that was polished and gold plated. Over the top, IMHO, but stunning. Nevertheless, I don't see the point of a bike your can't ride for fear of damage, wear and tear or theft. But that's just me.
Best regards, Frank

There appears to be a big eBay aftermarket for blinged-out old bike components; gold plating, anodizing, modern pantographing, drillium and whatnot. Most of the producers (or at least the eBay sellers) are in Italy and Eastern Europe. I have no idea how much they sell; I seldom see any examples out on the road.
As a retro-fetish originalist, my own inclination is to avoid turning sows' ears into silk purses. If it didn't come with gold-plated/anodized parts to begin with, I'm not likely to seek them out just to make the bike fancier. That said, if period-appropriate components that were already gold-plated, anodized, pantographed, drillium-ized happen to come to hand, and they're sympathetic to the bike, I'll use them. I'd certainly consider a full gold-anodized Simplex SLJ derailleur/shifter set for my Pro Grand Prix 24ct, assuming I could find a long cage rear derailleur; but I'd have to Frankenstein something together to make the cable routing work with the front derailleur. Good thing they're expensive; it gives me an excuse to avoid the issue.
